Help! re: iron levels

Our Pedi did say Bo was on the low end of iron levels and to continue the supplement Indifferent ...in the same breath he said "good news--we do not need to re-test". Hmmm? Help me wrap my mind around if the iron levels are low--why he would not want to check for improvement? Does this mean they are low--but will not stunt Bo's growth? At the 12 month apt he made me feel like I had done something horribly wrong for EBFing my LO and creating the possibility of an iron deficiency. This gave me complex and now what? Iron levels are low and open ended?

Your thoughts?

Re: Help! re: iron levels

  • Same thing with us. J was at an 11.4 (10 is the minimum end of normal). They did not want to retest at his 15 month appt. they said to just keep supplementing and we would reassess at 18 mths. Frustrating, for sure but no advice.

At least they will reassess! Does it ever make you think why our bodies would produce something so good for LO's but lack a nutrient?

  • Maybe they're planning on reassessing Bo at 18 mths? I can't imagine them telling you to do the iron drops (we use the same ones) indefinitely.  Jack fortunately loves them (what a weirdo), so it's NBD for us.

Our ped also said it was because I didn't eat enough iron rich foods.  I'm always borderline anemic, so that isn't a stretch of the imagination though. :)
