Straining to Poop? And blood?

DS1 has always struggled with BMs.... pushing multiple times a day and getting little bits at a time.  I have tried stool softener, which helps- but now he has blisters/anal fissures that bleed a bit.

I am waiting for the dr office to open up to call and see what they say to do... but I thought I would ask here for suggestions, as well.

TIA!

Re: Straining to Poop? And blood?

  • Lots of fiberous foods and lots of water. Both will help the digestive system move and all natural. TMI, but I've always had this problem since I can remember and I've tried it all. Exercise and what I've already recommended is what helps me. I have even seen a specialist and had a colonoscopy...not fun! All to find out fiber and water is the fix. The key is the water too. If you increase the fiber, but not a lot of water it can have the reverse effect.
Hope this is helpful. Good luck, poor baby...
PPD/PPA Mom...it has been super hard, but I'm making it! Slow steps...

  • You might also look at any particular foods that are a problem.  Dairy is known to be constipating for many people.  (And I had a similar problem to your son, though not as bad, until I eliminated it.)

  • DS started with this problem about 1-2 years ago.  His pedi said it was an anal fissure, but still sent us to a specialist.  Bloody stool has happened to DS on & off since then, so I have been giving him fiber gummies each day.

He had a very bad bleeding episode in September and we were sent back to the specialist, and now DS is soon to be scheduled for an endoscopy & colonoscopy, since it has been determined by the specialist that it was NOT an anal fissure or hemorhoid.

Of course this is our experience, but make sure to have it thoroughly checked out by your pedi to make sure its nothing more serious.

  • It sounds like he is impacted and may need some help from below (like a pedi enema or suppository) to get the hard poop out.  Once you do that you can focus on increasing the fiber and water in his diet.  If diet just isn't enough (and sometimes it isn't, I'm a pedi colorectal nurse and I see LOTS of kids that have poorly managed constipation) you can give fiber gummies or miralax, but your pedi can advise you.  For many kids that will be sufficient.  You'll need to keep his stool really soft for a few days until the blisters/fissures heal.
