can i skip "newborn"?

so, I'm planning on doing prefolds, and I am on a bit of a budget, I was wondering if I went with something like GMD prefolds, could I just skip over the "newborn" size and just get the "small"? i know it might be bulky but would it still work? I am just afraid that if I stock up on newborn size and baby is born at 9 or 10lb... then I'll be kinda SOL on those diapers

Re: can i skip "newborn"?

  • It's a hard call... all the babies born in my family lately have been 7-10 (yes! 10!) lbs... and DD was 5.  We were expecting a much bigger baby.  An option *maybe* would be to buy them and return them (unprepped) if they were too small?  Some people use disposables to fill the gap...or you can rent a newborn stash and return it.  DD was in the NB diapers until she was 2 months old (and still can use some of them)

FWIW, the green edge Sweet Pea diapers fit DD at 6 lbs and can still be tri-folded in a cover or stuffed in a pocket at 14 lbs... so that might be an option. The Bummis nb diapers were the only ones to fit DD at 5 lbs, but she did grow out of them relatively early.

  • I skipped over the newborn size and bought infant sized OsoCozy prefolds, which are actually a little narrower than the yellow edge GMDs. I was hoping DS would fit into them sooner rather than later.  My son was 8 lbs 2 oz when he was born and we didn't start CDing until he was 5-6 weeks old, so he was probably 10 lbs.  The infant size was still pretty bulky on him even at that time. DH and I really had a good laugh at how fluffy his butt was the first time I put him in one. I feel like the average sized newborn would really be swimming in a GMD size small.

  • It really depends on how tight your budget is.

Prefolds aren't that expensive, especially newborn ones. You could likely get away with a dozen if you wanted to wash daily, and use smalls as back ups.
Plus those prefolds would likely still be cheaper than disposables if you dislike how big small prefolds are.

  • My DS is 3 weeks old and about 10 lbs. Our NB GMD prefolds BARELY fit. Our GMD NB workhorses fit great still, but I have size small workhorses and prefolds on order. I think their seconds sale is still going on, so if I were you I'd buy both NB and small. You can always sell the NB or use them as inserts later. GL!

All of this. Plus, you can usually find a dozen gently used GMD NB prefolds on eBay for a good price.

  • If GMD is still doing their seconds sale, the newborn prefolds are SUPER cheap.  I got three dozen (maybe went a little overboard) for $45.

  • I got the Imagine smart fit from Nicki's Diapers in size small (skipped newborn to save $ and these were slightly cheaper than GMD).   They fit my DS pretty well right away and aren't too bulky using the jelly roll fold.  He was born at 8 lbs 10 oz.  I don't have any GMD prefolds tell you how they compare though.

As of this morning they still are - it's $10 off a dozen for newborn prefolds.  Very reasonable!

Have any of you actually purchased the GMD prefold seconds? It says on the description not to use them as your main stash, but should I follow that advice? It's so tempting to stock up with those low prices!nbsp; They would be my only prefolds; I'm just starting to build a stash.

I bought the seconds and bc our AIOs were crap, they are our main stash. Work great!
