Advice about safe acne treatments?

Hello,

My husband and I are ttc and so as a result, I have stopped using my acne medication. I know that some over the counter acne medications are safe for pregnancy, however I wanted to see if anyone out there knew of any non-benzoyl peroxide or non-salicylic acid skin care lines out there that people had good luck with. I've struggled with my acne for a long time. I started using Belli, but that seems to be making it worse.

Any advice from anyone else out there would be great!

Re: Advice about safe acne treatments?

  • I have been reading conflicting things about benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. Some things indicate small amount of SA are safe if used in cleansers but not leave on lotions. Others say no amount is safe. I have acne as well and I have been using a glycolic acid facial cleanser and the consensus on that is that it is safe during TTC and pregnancy. It actually works pretty well on my acne and evens my complexion. I use a brand called Image, I believe its a small company in Florida. I get it from my esthetician.

  • The only thing that really works for me is Neutrogena's Oil-Free Acne face wash (orange). I tried to find articles that say whether or not to use during pregnancy, but I only found conflicting answers. Some say not to use and some say it's fine. I'm going to use until I need to do further research (when I'm pregnant Smile )

  • I use the oil cleanse method to wash my face and I use tea tree oil on zits.
  • I know this sounds silly but the absolute best thing I've ever used is Noxema Triple Clean Anti-Blemish Pads. They are like $4.00 at Target but work better than the most expensive stuff I've ever used!

I've tried that, but it didn't work for me, BUT washing with Coconut Oil works great for me.. I use a tiny bit to moisturise at night-time too

  • I used face wash with SA everyday during my first pregnancy and have during this kne so far (I'm 31 weeks). Everything is fine. M doc was ok with it since its a wash and doesn't stay on my skin forever.
  • Ok, you might think this is weird but please hear me out. My whole teen and adult life I struggled hard with acne. Used every kind of pill and treatment. Like you, I wanted something safe to take while pregnant. I came across a blog about a pregnant woman who got really bad acne and as a result began washing with raw honey. Who ever thought to use this was freaking brilliant. I've been using it for 6 months and love, love, love it. It has to be raw honey not the clear drippy kind. The raw kind looks like peanut butter almost. It has these anti-bacterial properties, it softens skin, and it's great for combating wrinkles. I use it twice a day, and follow up with Fruit of The Earth Aloe Vera Gel. To treat myself I use Queen Helene Mint Julep Mask once or twice a week.. Seriously, the best decision I ever made!
