I always put the mouth part down in the basket so when you take them out you're only touching the handle.
Yup, me too unless I have a large number of utensil. Then I place half handle down and half handle up so that I can double the amount in each part of the basket and they still all get clean. That usually only happens if I don't do dishes over the weekend or we have company over.

Mouth part up. I feel like they get cleaner that way. DH does it mouth part down, and they never get clean enough (he also shoves like 40 utensils in one little basket, so that doesn't help either)

This is what I do.
Me too!

I usually do a mixture of both, except knives always go down. I'm kind of particular on this; my roommate from before I got married would place it all with the mouth up. It was one of those dishwashers with the basket in the bottom shelf and the one I have now has the basket in the door. I would almost stab myself trying to unload it and it drove me insane. Now, I try to get DH to put some forks and spoons up because he will put spoons in together with the mouth down and they will stick together and not get clean and it also drives me nuts.
