Pregnant after 35

Just found out last week, so, um, hi!

Still shaking my head at this whole thing but it's also very exciting.  Glad there are resources like this on the internet but also HOLY COW THE INTERNET IS GOING TO GIVE ME A FREAKING STROKE.  Everything I read seems aimed at scaring the (getting less and less comfortable) pants off me.  No OBGYN until 01/08 so until then I'm obsessing over every. little. thing.

  • My husband and I were married in October 2009 after 7 years together. About 6 months after the wedding, we ditched birth control and decided to let life take over. After over 2 years and many negative pregnancy tests, we were juuuust about to make other plans. Neither of us felt achingly incomplete - we knew we'd wonder "what if" from time to time, but we are both happy in life and with each other. I turned 39 this November and figured we'd talk about going back on BC after the holidays. Well, someone heard me and thought that was funny, because it turns out I got pregnant on my birthday. I know this because my husband had been sick few days prior, and had been out of town just before that, so things had been, um, "slow" for a few weeks. Due to my already very irregular cycle, I hadn't really noticed I was late. I fluctuate between a 31 and 45 day cycle, so when I found myself ten days late, I thought almost nothing of it. Almost. I've taken so many negative tests that when I finally took one December 11th on my lunch break, I was already getting ready to throw it away when it turned positive. I think I left part of my jaw on the bathroom floor. So here I am, 39 and pregnant with not exactly an unplanned baby, but a surprise nonetheless. Other than not sleeping (I've been an insomniac since my early 20s anyway) I feel mostly amazing. My moods do swing a bit, but overall I'm even more chipper than usual - and that's saying something. I generally wake up jabbering or giggling. I'm hoping the baby is healthy, and will have my first appt. with my OBGYN on 01/08. Until then I am trying to save myself from the internets and a genetically engineered capacity for worry.   :)

  • Just take a deep breath and keep telling yourself "My body knows what it is doing"   It might not hurt to head out and get some over-the-counter vitamins before your first appointment.

The Doctor will probably want to do an ultrasound very early on (because of your age)....so you will get to see your little bean very soon! :)

Exciting stuff!   Try to keep yourself from reading the scary stuff...no reason to stress yourself out here....congrats!!!!

  • Welcome!  Like the PP said...stay away from Dr. Google!!

     Awesome story!  Congrats!  :-)

  • What a wonderful surprise! Welcome and congratulations--and don't believe all the fearmongering crap out there on the Internet about being older. If you are in generally decent health, you have an excellent chance of having a total yawner of a pregnancy.
