Has anyone thought about using them? Plan to use them? Or already have used them?
I have been considering this but can't decide. The whole thought of having to spray the poop off, I just am not sure!
If you are planning to use them or have used them before. Give me your good, bad and ugly on cloth diapering.

Re: Cloth Diapers.
I would like to use them. I think it could save a lot of money in the long run, and we would aim to use disposables only when not home (for more than a couple hours) or on trips.
I have no idea if this is realistic or not. But when my aunt's first was born, my aunt MADE cloth diapers and used them. After she switched to disposables, she said that her baby had a lot less diaper rash.
I think it's something I will seriously consider. I haven't done the math yet, but even the lesser impact on the environment seems like it's something to consider.
I CD'd DS for a month or two. I personally was not a fan. I didn't like how the cloth diapers were so bulky. I also didn't like cleaning the poo off, or having to do the extra laundry! At the time I had 2u2 so things were chaotic enough- I really didn't need the extra work that cloth diapers required.
If you're going to cloth diaper you really have to be committed, lol. I was definitely not.
We still have two in diapers now (hoping DD will potty train SOON!) but we really don't spend THAT much on diapers a month. We buy in bulk from Amazon mom, and have the prime membership. We probably spend about $40-50 a month on diapers.

We've been using cloth since DS was about 2.5 months old and I love it. I seriously cringe at the cost when we've needed to switch to disposables for various reasons. We use mostly Elementals and a few pockets for daycare, and use fitteds and flips during the weekends.
The poo goes in stages depending on his age, food, etc so it's really not that bad. Spraying poo and washing diapers has just become part of my routine so I don't mind it.
I hope to use prefolds and covers from the start with this baby.

Cloth Diaper Review Sheet
I noticed there are different types of cloth diapers and such. I will have to do my research! I do really like the thought of saving money. I am sure my husband will be on board with that.
We use green mountain prefolds and they've worked well. Covers are tricky though because I've found that as the waterproof coating wears, you'll get more leaks. I was happy with our flips covers until they started wearing. I think we'll switch back to Thirsties duos for this one.
I'll also be getting a sprayer this time. Dunking and swishing is not fun. It took about 300 for all supplies over time but we've probably saved at least a few hundred dollars, if not more.

Check out this website. We will be using cloth and this has helped me learn SO much. I originally wanted to get pocket diapers, but am now convinced I will prefer prefolds with covers.... It's cheaper and in my opinion easier....
I wanted to use them. We did for about a month or so but it turned out my daughter had terrible acid reflux, and we didn't know if she was screaming because of the reflux or because she was wet and so we nixed the whole thing. I'd love to start doing it NOW in an attempt to get my kid out of diapers but after the fiasco of them not working, DH would never go for it again.
I think if you want to do it, commit and try it out. It's worth a try!
I just looked these up, that actually looks like it's not that bad of an idea. I may look into that.
I have been trying to pick out my perfect cloth diaper months before we were even ttc. For us it's for the cash savings! I plan on making my own cloth diapers as well once I find out the sex but my favorite cloth diapers so far are softbums, fuzzibunz, and Carlie Banana (I don't like to see the snaps on the front of an OS diaper so all of these have Adjustable leg elastic).
I was afraid of getting my hands dirty too but whether disposable or cloth you're going to encounter poop sometime, that's the way I see it.
Yea I thought it looked like a really good idea. Kind of the best of both worlds. So if we are going somewhere where cloth would be really difficult, or my parents house where they don't want to spray off poop lol, we can just throw an disposable insert in.
This, we tried for a few months but it just didn't work for us. Like PP says, you have to be committed, and we weren't. We lived in a smaller town with no diaper service, and I just didn't like all the fuss of soaking diapers and washing them multiple times (because once didn't ever seem enough). Started buying disposables for when we were away from the house, then just using them more and more, until we weren't using the cloth ones anymore.
Although to be honest it was 18 years ago and cloth diapers have changed a lot since then, might be worth checking into this time around.

We used CDs (prefolds with Thirsties covers) until C started to potty train. Now we just use disposables for whenever we go out or overnight. It's really easy and cheap. I didn't find the extra laundry to be a problem, but I stay at home.
This time, I think I'm going to supplement with some AIOs. My friends have some and they're really easy and cute.

Just a heads up and something to consider for your personal taste but I have heard a lot of moms complain that flush able liners are more work and more disgusting because you have to rip apart the liners first to make them flush able which means putting your hands all over the soiled part. Just passing on what I've read from reviews and research
We've been CDing DD since she was 3 weeks old. We bought a stash and have washed at home since day 1. It is not hard and not that much extra work. 2 extra loads of laundry a week to save quite a lot of money. You will be touching poop whether you use cloth or disposable. I went with the economic option and also the one proven to have less blow outs.
(We've had 1 blow out EVER - that says a lot!) I didn't even know moms still CD until joining the bump while pregnant last time. Veteran moms taught me everything.
I am super excited about spending 0 for LO 2's diapers.
I haven't found cloth to be particularly demanding. But everyone has some things they don't mind and some things that drive them nuts. I hated making baby food. But cloth diapers weren't big deal to me.
Baby Name Popularity by State
I am seriously looking into the whole CD thing! I really want to do it, mostly for health reasons and for potty training reasons. (Reading that babies who use cloth diapers potty train an average of 6 months earlier than disposable diaper babies)
There is so much info out there though...and a ton of options. I just need to try to make sense of it all and figure out what's the best thing to do.
whe I told my DH he looked at me like I was crazy but, I asked him to hear me out on the reasons and he seemed to come around a little...
I just wanted to give you a heads up I hated the Gdiapers. There are so many issues with them I don't know where to start.

Surprise! BFP 12/4/12 EDD 8/8/2012
I freaking loved using cloth and I can't wait to use them all over again! I never sprayed one diaper... until they are eating solids the poop is easily rinsed away in the wash (the trick is to do a warm rinse first, that loosens it better). The few solid food poops I did experience were easily cleaned up with a paper towel to get the excess off and the rest easily came out in the washer.
We had ZERO blowouts, the only poop he ever got on his clothes was a tiny bit that had leaked around his thighs after a huge dump. Just take off the diaper, toss it in the laundry bag, come laundry day, toss it in the washer, run through the routine, and my favorite part... end up with a basket full of adorable, fluffy, clean smelling diapers! I actually preferred my diaper laundry over clothes laundry.
Yes, they make clothes fit a bit different, your baby will have a little booty and it's adorable and definitely something easily adjusted to.
They are addicting, so it can end up costing you more if you don't keep yourself in check. I probably spent as much as I would have on disposables. BUT, I won't have to spend one dime on diapers for this baby or the next one if I didn't want to, so it's still cheaper in the long run.
Definitely do your research. Youtube has some great cloth diaper 101 videos and there are many good websites out there along with forums packed with info. However, do not decide on which brand or system you will go with before you are able to try it out in your baby. There are so many choices out there and every diaper fits every baby a little differently, so go with a variety. Jillian's Drawers has a great trial program, I did it and it was exactly what I needed to start out. There are also many online stores that have gently used inventory. No, it's not gross. They are thoroughly sanitized and most you could never tell were used. It's a great, cheaper way to try out different types and brands. At least 80% of my stash was bought used and I saved a ton of money because of that. My kid never had anything other than a clear, soft butt, completely free of any rash or irritation. Butt paste? It was unnecessary in my house!
Be aware there is a learning curve. You will probably have a few mishaps in the beginning. Just stick with it and you will find your rhythm!
We used CD with our DS for about the first year and a half. We did use disposables for the first couple of weeks until he could fit into the cloth diapers (so just until he grew out of the NB size diapers). I found it to be super cost effective and not too horrible on laundry and I hope to use them again with this baby.
There are so many options for CDs out there now, that you can find a solution that really works for you and your family and makes the "cons" that we all hear about almost nonexistent.
Okay, that makes sense. I thought they needed to sort of soak in the water.
I thought it was either either rip open or you could use the swish stick? I'm not totally sure though, so I could be wrong. I need to read more about it for sure.
I CD'd with prefolds and covers until DS got to be about 6 months. I found CDing with prefolds extremely easy. When they are that little, they don't pee or poo much, and if you are BF the poo just washes away, no rinsing needed.
Once DS became mobile and on solids at 6 mo (he was an early mover!) I switched to disposable. I had bought a stash of BG 4.0s but found they were a lot bulkier and he was getting annoyed with them, plus I have an HE washer I had to constantly "trick" to get enough water to wash "grown up baby poo" adequately. Plus they took FOREVER to dry compared to the prefolds. Now, are any of those things super annoying?...no not really. I SAH, I certainly could deal with all those things...but with our lifestyle changing and my wants and needs...it just didn't work for me anymore. We go to lots of playdates, museums, parks, etc. And I hate carrying a diaper bag. I prefer to carry a smallish purse with just an extra diaper and a wipes case now. I just didn't like carrying around all the extra stuff (soiled dipes/extra super poofy dipes, etc). Plus I found our energy bill went down significantly when I stopped washing and drying dipes as much. As much as disposable diapers? NO, but it was a noticeable change.
We use generic diapers now and with coupons/sales I spend maybe $40 a month on diapers. But CDing has more benefits than just economical, its greener too. So try it!
I commend those that choose to do it! Just not for me past the 6 month mark! I got my prefolds from Green Mountain Diaper Company and Bummis covers, and am very excited to use them again with this baby.
The great thing about CDing is that the products hold their value really well. I ended up selling my Bum Genius stash that I had meticulously cared for and got almost 90% of my money back out of them by selling them on Ebay. So really, its very easy to "back out" if you decide its not for you!
I have either heard amazing things or absolutely terrible things about them =/
