Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Late babblers come in

Hi there, my dd is 6.5 mo and only makes grunting noises, still! At this age her sister was def making more babbling vowel sounds. The doctor said to call in 4 weeks if no improvement, but I feel like its always in the back of my mind when she is just playing so quietly all day long. She is advanced w her motor skills.

I posted a few weeks ago asking about early intervention [which ped said could start at 9 mo if needed] and I appreciated everyone's response who has btdt.

Just wanted to hear more stories, if there is anyone else out there who has a late babbler, and how it worked out for you!

Re: Late babblers come in

  • my dd was this way, she was grunting, squealing, everything except consonant sounds at around 7.5 (6.5 adjusted).  her twin brother, though, was babbling up a storm.  our pt just said to step up our talking to her, which i did...kinda feels silly naming street signs and calling out what i see on the road while in the car!  but lo and behold, she started babbling a couple days later!  also, she's exposed to different languages, so our pt said that could maybe confuse her...and while she may seem behind on her babbling, she's actually absorbing more and will come out ahead.  i don't know if that's true, but she did all of a sudden start with her b's, m's and d's.

  • I don't remember much babbling from either of my older two (3 and 2 yo now).

3yo repeated sounds at 18 months, said words at 19 months.

2yo still doesn't talk. Seriously. He was so quiet as a baby, no babbling sounds, only said the mamamam and dadadada sounds a few times in his life. We are going to speech therapy for it.

4mo is suuuuper "talkative". She babbles all the time.

  • I asked a similar question a few weeks ago when DS had just turned seven months.  He was grunting and cooing and shrieking, but there was not a babble in sight.  Then, out of nowhere he busted out a "mamamamama" one day, and hasn't stopped babbling since!  I know how worrying it can be, but try to hang in there!

  • I dont know where your from, but in my state (PA) you can call early intervention yourself and they will come to your home to do a complete evaluation for free. Just a heads up...incase you dont want to wait for your pedi. Dont know if all states are the same though, good luck!
  • I honestly wouldn't worry about it. DS was a late talker, but always physically advanced. We went through the whole early intervention thing starting at 15 mos. They told us that many times, babies that are focusing more on physical things are late talkers. They put all their focus on one thing at a time. My DD makes great eye contact, coos, grunts, etc, but doesn't babble yet. However, she's been sitting completely unassisted since end of four months and is already trying to pull up on things at 7 months. I'm not at all concerned
