Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

pediatric opthamologist

Has anyone's LO had to see a pediatric eye doctor?? If so, can you share with  me how it went, what they did, etc? My DD had her 18 month appointment yesterday and I brought up to the pedi that she had been rubbing her right eye. It is inconsistent and not only when she is tired but she can really go at her poor little eye. She told me that her one eye may be weaker than the other and since they can't express that to anyone they will rub or swat at it. She said that if that is the case, she would likely have to wear a patch over the stronger one in order to strengthen the weaker eye. I don't exactly know how I would keep a patch on an 18 month old's eye when I can't even get her to keep a winter hat on!

Anyway, just kind of nervous about having to see a specialist, so if anyone could provide some insight I would appreciate it!

  • I took my daughter when she was around 5 months old (I was concerned about lazy eye).  It was a great experience with the one we chose.  It has been more than a year so can't remember the details, but everything he did he explained before hand - not only what he was going to do but why.  He did put drops in her eyes at one point, which really didn't phase her at that time remember, she was around 5 months).  I think the appointment took around an hour, he was very thorough and we in no way felt rushed.

  • We went to one in August (DD was 16 months) to get her field vision tested (she doesn't have blink reflex when an object approaches her right side so her physiatrist recommended we go).  Like PP's said, they put drops in her eyes which didn't seem to bother her at all.  She played in the play area while we waited for her pupils to dialate.  During the exam, she sat on my lap. The opthamologist used a few tools to look in her eyes then used some toys to distract her and to make her focus in a certain area.  Whole exam was about 10 minutes. She wasn't bothered by it at all.  They are trained to handle little ones so I'm sure your DD will be just fine :)  My DD goes to specialists every week so I know that nervous feeling! Good luck!

  • We took DD at around 11 months to my ophthalmologist because he recommends bring baby in at ten months or so to detect vision problems early. They put drops in her eyes to dilate. He shined some things and looked in her eyes. The exam itself took maybe 10 minutes.

  • Thanks for all of the info everyone! I appreciate it. My DH and I have terrible vision but ours didn't start to decline until middle school. I guess I was hopeful she would either avoid it altogether or at least make it to a point where she could just wear contacts instead of having to worry about glasses or something else that could be a bother to her. Mainly I just want her to be 100% healthy...I guess that is what it really comes down to!Big Smile
  • I don't know the climate you are in but honesty it could be dry eyes. That would make you rub your eye a lot.
  • Our DS has been seeing eye doc every 3 months since he was 3 months old. Eye exam is much like an adults. Obviously baby can't talk, so they base results on how baby's eyes react/move by looking at different pics and lights. Also, how light reflects off of their eyes (don't know medical term for this). One warning...pedi eye doc offices tend to be very slow with a lot of wait time. Seems silly since they are dealing with kids. Take plenty of food, diapers, and entertainment !! Also, our on patches for an hour a day! They make sticky patches  that just peel off. Doc said there is also a drop you can use if baby doesn't acclimate to patch. At 20 months my son doesn't fight it at all!  I have found the best patches are from www.ortopadusa.com! Good luck!
