  To me Shane will always be a boy name... with that spelling I think somebody just threw in an unnecessary y

  Definitely boy, but that spelling is awful. DH is Shane so I would never see it as a girl name.

  yep, boy name with terrible spelling, which also makes for a terrible girl name.

  This. The Y wouldn't make it a girl name like some people seem to believe. 

  Exactly, changing spelling doesn't stop it from being a male name.

  Boy.  

  Although I did know a Shane that was a girl, then again I also knew a girl named Michael and another girl named Ryan, so maybe I just had friends with strange parents.
