Fundal Height Measuring A Little Short at 31 weeks.

I had my 31 week appointment on Tuesday, and my doctor told me everything looks good with the baby and me.  But my fundal height is measuring at 29.5 cm.  She said I shouldn't be worried about it because she won't worry until is it 3 cm off.  I saw the same doctor for my 24 week appointment, and she told me the same thing.  When I went for my 28 week appointent I saw somene else who said I was measuring right where I should be.  I am a small person, and she said it's normal with someone of my size to be measuring small.  But this is my first baby, and I am overly paranoid anyway.  So I asked for an ultrasound to make sure the baby is measuring where he should be.  My husband thinks I am overreacting, but if something is going on with the baby I would like to know what we can do now versus waiting another 3 weeks.  Has anyone else measured small?

Re: Fundal Height Measuring A Little Short at 31 weeks.

  • So you have been measuring about 1-1.5cm small all along? If so that is totally normal. It is a general rule that you should be 1:1 with the week you are in, but if you are consistently measuring about the same amount "behind" there is nothing wrong with that. Like your doctor said - no need to worry. If you were measuring right on the entire time THEN suddenly were measuring 2-3cm behind then your doc would probably order further tests. I have been measuring 1-2cm ahead my entire pregnancy, but I have a very long torso so my doc said that's fine.

I would not stress. If you REALLY WANT another ultrasound that is your call, but I think you can relax...your doc would tell you if you should worry :)

  • My fundal height has been pretty sparodic through out this pregnancy varying from spot on to two or three cm behind. Unless your doctor says they are concerned I wouldn't worry about it. Lots of times fundal height can be off since LO is always in a different positon.

  • At my 28 week appointment I was measuring behind. But then at the 31 week appointment I was right on track. I think the baby just had a growth spurt at a different time.
  • I would try not to worry too much if the doctor hasn't begun to worry. I know its hard, and I would worry to (ftm also).

    Good luck.

  • I was measuring small also around 28-30 weeks... I can't remember exactly.  He said I was measuring about 3-4 weeks off so they did order an ultrasound just to be safe although he thought it was probably just because of the position of baby. When I had my ultrasound our baby was measuring right where she should be. Don't stress about it. It is probably no big deal. If your doctor was worried enough about it they would order an ultrasound to make sure.

    Good Luck!

  • I was sent for two growth u/s two weeks apart bc I was measuring 3 weeks behind. Everything is just fine, shes in the 34. I'm a small person so it makes sense that the baby will be smaller. I will probably measure behind the whole time.

  • Sounds well within the normal range. Babies aren't all the same size and depending on the angle/placement of your uterus, it's normal to measure a little off. Also you're not losing cms each time (as 1 wk behind, then 2 then 3) which sounds like that's just your normal.

I'm measuring 4-5 weeks behind so I am getting growth U/S. I would not have expected them in your position though.

Oh and even after having a growth U/S that indicates that LO is in the 15th% and growth is uneven it's still another 3 weeks before they check again. There isn't really much they can do at this point regardless.

  • Honestly 1.5 cm isn't that off. You should trust your doctor. If you were measuring 3cm off and they weren't doing anything then I could see requesting an ultrasound but 1.5 seems okay. I measured way behind with my second and was sent for some growth scans towards the end and she was a perfectly healthy 6lb 18" baby. I am measuring way behind with this one as well but this one has IUGR. If your  doctor feels there is a need to worry he will order that ultrasound :)

  • Thanks for the encouraging words.  I ended up having the ultrasound today, and the baby is doing perfectly fine.  He is in the 58% for his growth which is awesome.  I guess I am just measuring small because of my build and probably will until the end. Thanks again for encouraging me.  I feel like I over analyze things a lot with this being my first baby :)
