Baby Names

Anyone naming their LO from the top 10?

and saying, "popularity be damned, I love this name!"

I'm harassing this board trying to come to terms with our top two names.  One is very popular and I've always loved it, but I have a 'road less traveled' personality in general and having a hard time accepting the name's popularity.

Our other. name ranks in the 700s and I like it very much but I know in my heart it's currently in second place.

Just digging for something, don't even know what.

Re: Anyone naming their LO from the top 10?

  • I rejected the popular name I liked because I just don't want my child to be one of a bunch of the same named kid when in school. My best friend is Lauren and she STILL complains about the multitude of Laurens and how she is still called by her last name or, at very least, last initial.

We are going very much with a road less traveled name.

  • Popularity is tricky. What might seem more "out there" today may very well be considered "popular" and even "trendy" tomorrow.

When we named DS1 nearly 6 years ago, we didn't know anybody IRL with our "this is IT!" name. This predated BNB, but my tri board also loved our pick. Now, it's considered overexposed and oftentimes included on lists as a top hated name. Am I sorry about our decision? Absolutely not. I still adore it. Am I annoyed that it became uber popular? Yep, definitely.

That being said, DS is the only one in his preschool class, plethora of sports teams and summer camp group.

    So, you never know.

  • We chose Ethan because we have loved it for so long. It doesn't bother me how popular it is because out of 2 years of school so far we have yet to meet another Ethan and no one we know has used the name for their child yet either. Eventually, we will run into more, but it's not as common where I live and definitely not in the top 10 where I live.

  • Yep. Popularity doesn't bother me.

My D is Chloe. If this baby is a boy, he will be Jack, but that's because it's an important family name; popularity can't touch that. Other girl names we like are Ella, Eva, Hannah, Clara, Maya, Annabel. Some less popular ones, too, but for the most part we like popular names.

  • DS1's name is not even in the top 1000 and DD's and DS2's names are in the top 20. We've had no issues so far with the popularity of the younger two's names and oddly someone in DD's class at school who we are also friends with has DS1's name. You just never know.

I don't think you'll regret going with what you love.
  • Popular names are popular for a reason. They are usually classics. I stay away from "trendy" names and go with classic names that may be more popular right now, but for good reason!

  • Have you thought of going with the name you love but substituting a Y for one of the letters?  That would make it unique Cool

You only get one chance to name your kid, and they will be the one sitting at your dinner table, not the multitude of other kids with the same name, if that is what you imagine your kid's name as, popularity be damned.  All the 80's Jennifers survived.

  • Is your name #1 or 2?  Because really, if it's like #9 or 10 or somewhere near there, you probably won't have much of a problem with him sharing the name with classmates.  I stayed away from top 10 names.  I like most of them, but I like names that are a little different.  That being said, I picked two Scottish/Irish/Welsh names that reflect my heritage.  I love the name Rhys, but many people have trouble pronouncing or spelling it.  Of course, my name is Erica, and I'm amazed how many people can't spell my name either.

  • Our boy name is William.  I've had some misgivings about the popularity but it's really important to DH and it's been such a classic name that I've always liked.  I'm not crazy about the popularity, I even have misgivings now about DS's name (Theodore) and our top girl names (Margaret, Josephine and Elizabeth- definitely this one).  If it weren't for DH I'd be drawn to much less popular names.  Though I think sometimes I'm digging for them just for the sake of finding one that's unpopular and less because I really like the name.  DH is a bit of a rational voice there.

  • Amelia is apparently on the rise now and getting super popular. But we love it and we've loved it for a long time. We're not going to let it change our minds.

I'm a Rachel and more often than not I was one of at least two Rachels on my sports teams or youth groups, but not always. Sometimes it annoyed me, but not so much that I would still be harping about it. I don't need a "you-neek" name to make myself "special" or my own person.

  • To me popularity is a big deal breaker for me. My name was not even in the top 10 in my birth year (more like in the 40's or 50's). I still had at least 1 other girl with my name each school year, usually more. I freaking hated it. I hated growing up being Andrea R. or Andrea 3. I didn't want that for my kids. So I have a strict not on the top 100 rule.

Which makes me sad, since one of my favorite names I cannot use (Liam) due to popularity. So instead it got a middle name slot.

  • I'd be more likely to use a popular name for a boy than for a girl. There are lots of solid classics for boys that are very popular (like Daniel), but girls' names are more fickle. I do love Emma and Emily, but there's no chance I'd use those w/ DD's name.
  • I was mad that DD (Amelia) was #30 the year she was born and still on the rise.  I was convinced I didn't want a name in the top 50, but then we (and by we I mean my DH) fell in love with the name so we went ahead with it anyways.  now I cannot imagine her named anything different.

Our boy name for this lo is Nathan which seems to consistantly be in the 20s.  Our girl name for this lo is Genevieve, on a slow rise, but still in the 200s.

I say if you love it, I would go for it.

  • Y'know .... my DD is named Emma and when she was born in 2003, it was the 2nd most popular name of the year (I did not know that when I named her).  I know there are now tons of Emmas out there .... but she's in 3rd grade now and has not had another Emma in her class yet!  :)

That's my name, and I've never really had an issue with it's popularity. I was the only one in my grade in school..,

I think it may depend on your location...
  • I love the name Emma and if DH is ok with it, then that will be my girl name. I'm not going to avoid using a name I love just because it's popular. I haven't heard a name that I love more, so why wouldn't I use it?

  • For me, any name in the top 10 (even the top 20) are pretty much off the list by default. Having a baby name that 10-20,000 other people per year name their kid is just too much for me. Caleb was a name I quite liked, but after realizing over 10,000 people named their baby that name last year, it got removed off the list. However, at the same time, I found so many names I liked just as much as Caleb that weren't nearly as popular. If one of the top 10 names was just leagues better than any other name options in my mind, I would have to give it some serious thought before getting rid of it completely.
  • No...because my mom named me Amanda...in the 80's when that stupid song came out. Growing up, I was one out of at least four other Amandas in my class and I hated it. Hated it. I always wanted a more unique name or at least one where three other people didn't think they were being talked to instead of me.

  • I didn't even know Chloe was popular until after we named DD that and I've still never met another even though its high on recent lists. The only way a popular name would be a no no for me would be if a close friend or family member used that name

     Love Emma!

  • It wasn't in the top ten last year but I'm betting it will be this year. We went with our favorite from our list. The name suits him and I wouldn't change it.

  • Well, we're not going top 10, but I am coming a little more to the side of "popularity be damned!"....

Our last name is pretty common (I think last time I looked it up, it was somewhere between #15-20 in the U.S.), so I want to avoid a common/plain name for that reason. I'd originally said I wanted to stay out of the top 100. But then I realized that some of the names I love the most are somewhere in 50-100. We probably won't go much lower than that (I love Amelia, for example, but if we use it it will be in the MN spot), but I'm not ruling anything out on that basis alone. And who knows what will jump in the next couple of years? I was also recently surprised to find out that my name was #15 in my state the year I was born - I didn't have a classmate with the same name as me until high school, and I went to a fairly big school. So all in all, I'm just worrying about the SSA list a lot less.
