Babies: 6 - 9 Months

When to start adding more food?

i have had LO on purees for about 5 weeks now. she started with one 3.5-4oz veggie feeding a day, that got bumped up to twice a day about 2 weeks ago, and about a week ago, that got upped to 7-8 oz per feeding. about 4 days ago, i changed one feeding over to fruit. and she gets some broken up puffs after each meal for some practice, she only really eats about a third of them.

so when should i start considering a third feeding? the last time we went to her pedi, she was already talking about 3 meals a day. and at the time i thought it would have been too much.

LO loves food. she just gobbles it down when ever its a puree feeding. i pull out her spoon, and i clink her baby jars together, and she start bouncing and screaming/giggling! its the best thing ever.

so, when did you start a third meal?

Re: When to start adding more food?

  • At LO's 6 month appt, our pedi said to hold off on the "lunch" or 3rd meal until he is down to 2 naps a day.  She said eating time shouldn't interfere with nap time, and DS tends to nap around lunch time!

  • We are still only doing once per day. DD loves carrots and that is about it. She does ok with applesauce but not much interest in anything else. We just keep trying. I am going to add a second meal after the holidays. I have read that by 9 months they should be on 3 meals per day.

  • We only give once a day. Usually two or three ounces of a veggie. I sometimes give a fruit instead. DD is not picky. She also gets puffs or baby mum mums too in the day. I try to limit the solids because she is EBF and I don't want to lose my supply. I like the puffs for practicing her picking up.
