Breast feeding GD

When you have gd can you breast feed. I just found out today I have it and I'm 28 weeks. I really wanted to breast feed though. Does anyone know?

Re: Breast feeding GD

  • Theoretically, if it's truly GD, it will be gone after birth. But even if we did still have diabetes, I don't see how it would have any effect on breastmilk production or the ability to breastfeed.

Yes!  You're encouraged even more to breastfeed if you have GD.  Breastfeeding helps reduce your risk of developing Type II as well as reducing your baby's chance of being overweight or eventually developing diabetes.

At least that's what they told me in my GD class - it was one of my first concerns too.

  • If does have an effect because when the baby comes out they will have been used to a higher sugar level and your milk won't come in for a few days. My DD had to have two bottles of formula within the first day so her blood sugar didn't drop. after that we breast fed exclusively. Gl!

  • I'm a nurse in the newborn nursery. There is no reason why you can't BF with GD. The baby may have low blood sugars at birth, or within the 1st 24hrs. If that's the case and it doesn't come up after breastfeeding, the baby may need to be temporarily supplemented.

  • I breastfed DD1 for 3 1/2 years (she still nurses once a week or so) and am breastfeeding my six month old.  I had GD with both pregnancies.

I felt very strongly that I did not want to supplement DD2 with any formula, so I hand expressed and saved colostrum before she was born and brought it to the hospital, just in case her blood sugar was low.

Both girls' blood sugar were fine, though, and I was able to exclusively breastfeed until they started solids...Neither girl has ever needed formula.
