Cloth Diapering

Dryer sheet alternatives

We stopped using dryer sheets completely when we started CD-ing. We're starting to have a major problem with static though. Would it be bad for the diapers if I used dryer sheets for the rest of my laundry? I wasn't sure if there would be build-up or residue in the dryer after a while.

Or is there an alternative that helps with static? I've heard of dryer bslls, but I wasn't sure if the helped with static.

  • Static means you're drying your clothes too long. Or you're drying synthetics that would be much happier being hung to dry.

  • I think the dryer balls still help with static.  But I also still use dryer sheets with my sheets and towels and it hasn't affected my CDs so far.

  • I use wool balls in place of dryer sheets.

If you use wools dryer balls and accidentally over dry (what causes the static) you can dampen your balls (why is it impossible to talk about this without sounding dirty) and throw them back in for a couple of minutes.

  • Another vote for wool dryer balls. And drying for less time.

I've actually never used dryer sheets in my current dryer (I bought it over 6 years ago) and we rarely have a static problem.

This. I never knew I could dampen my balls to fix the static though! Good to know, apparently I'm always over drying our clothes because I've been having a static problem.

  • I got my dryer balls a month or two ago planning to use them on los clothes and diapers but decided to try them out on our clothes to see if I actually liked them and I love them. I didn't know about being able to wet them if I have static but so far that hasn't been a problem as the dryer balls do a great job. I even used them on this one fluffy blanket that always gets insainly staticky and for the first time in the 3 years I've had the blanket it doesn't shock me, even in the dry winter! I haven't used a dryer sheet since the balls arrived and I love that my clothes no longer have that yucky film that always dried out my skin so bad when I was putting the fresh clothes away!
  • Thanks! I'll try the wool dryer balls. We mostly have an issue with fleece things - blankets and pjs. I didn't know over-drying could be part of the problem. Our dryer is supposed to sense when stuff is dry so maybe I just need to stop it a little early.
