Picking an OB!

I moved here a little bit ago and I don't have an ob yet. What are some things you ladies look for in finding a good ob? This is also my first pregnancy.

  • What are your feelings on natural birth? Are you definitely wanting a drug free, intervention free birth? Would you be high risk in any way- any chronic medical conditions, etc?

Do you have a particular hospital you wish to deliver at? Find out which OB's deliver there.

Go on the local boards and ask for recommendations.

Also, call the labor and delivery unit and ask their recommendations. They work with these doctors constantly and would be able to help.

  • We have no choice in Ontario. They are considered specialists, so whomever your family doctor gives you a referral to that has availability is your OB.

  • For me, I looked first at who my medical insurance would cover. From there, I looked at patient reviews online and asked around at work (I work at a hospital). I really just want someone straightforward and who I will be comfortable around. I also preferred a woman. Hope this helps!
  • We just moved as well and found out I was pregnant a month later. Thankfully we moved to my husbands home town. So I went to hus family doctor for a recomendation. We didn't have a hospital choice or anything. I just mentioned that we'd prefer a woman and a doc that would be respectful of no interventions, and he gave us a name. The good thing if it's early on is being able to move on if the doctor doesn't seem to mesh with you.
