Babies: 6 - 9 Months

8 month olds and naps

How many naps does your 8 month old take? Do they STTN?

My boys are currently taking 3 naps, but they keep getting shorter and shorter, and I'm wondering if I need to transition them to 2 naps, in hopes of getting longer, more quality sleep. They also don't STTN, but that's a whole other issue....

TIA!

Re: 8 month olds and naps

  • At 8 months, DS was sleeping 6 pm-6ish am, with 2 30-60 minute naps during the day.

  • He is on 2 naps a day. from anywhere from 45 mins to 2 hours each

  • DD and DS STTN starting after 7 months.  We did sleep training and it worked great.  They go to bed between 730pm-8pm and are up some time after 6am.  They take a morning nap, usually 1-1.5 hours, and afternoon nap again 1-1.5 hours and usually a 30-45min nap at about 5ish.  If they don't take that last nap it just means they will be a bit fussy during the dinner time process but not unbearable.  I believe the 3rd nap is what drops first and the other 2 stay about the same.

  • My 8 month old wakes between 67am and takes his first nap at 10 lasts till about 12 noon, second nap is around 2pm and lasts about 3045min. Sometimes he'll take a 1520min around 5. He goes to bed at 8pm and wakes to eat between 34am to eat then goes back down.
  • L STTN twice in the past 2 months. Her naps suck especially at daycare. She takes anywhere from 1-3 naps there. Usually she has an evening nap but at one point it looked like she was dropping it. Her sleep is not consistent at all.

  • We are still on three naps. Usually he has one 90 minute nap and two 30 to 45 minute naps. He is sttn from 830 to 730. We tried to transition to two naps but most of the time he goes into full on meltdown mode after being awake for 2 to 2 and a half hours so three naps it is.

  • DD's naps are kind of all over the place, but in general she's been taking 2-3 naps a day. Usually a 30-45 minute one in the morning between 10-11 and another one in the afternoon, between 2-4. The afternoon one is usually a little longer. Then she sometimes takes a doze while she nurses around 5:30. She usually wakes up once at night (around 4), unless something is bothering her, like the 4 teeth she has coming in right now.....We haven't done any kind of scheduling or sleep training, we attempted it and it just did not work for us, so this is DD's natural rhythm. I wish we could get something more consistent down, but she's a horrible sleeper so I just take what I can get!

  • We just recently dropped the 3rd nap although occasionally he will have it, I think your LO will figure it out on his own I wouldn't worry about changing anything you are doing right now.

  • At 8 months, LO STTN from 7:30-7 am, with 2 naps per day.  Nap 1 at 9-9:30am and nap 2 at 1:30-2am.  She started that schedule at about 5 months.  Currently, she is showing signs of dropping the morning nap; I predict it will be done completely around 10 months.

That said, every baby is different regarding sleep.  I would go for a consistent routine regardless of how many naps they take.  Most kids do better if they know what to expect, and this will hopefully help them STTN.

If the naps are getting shorter and they aren't going going down happy/content, maybe it's time to try a 2 nap schedule for several days and see how it goes.

This--except DD has STTN for a while...she is a great sleeper.  I think my ODD dropped her first nap but it could have been the 3rd one around this time.  I can't even remember.
