Baby Names

Naming son after father?

Just curious, but if you name your child the same first name as the father, how do you differentiate when calling/talking to them???

Have a family member who does Big ___ and Little ___ but the little thing might get annoying to him once he gets older, and then another one who does FN for H and FN MN for LO, but then when they had DS2 they call him by his FN and MN as well...

thoughts?

(we weren't planning on doing this, just a random question)

ETA: It's weird how you never really see girls that are II, IIIs or Jrs...

Re: Naming son after father?

  • My husband is the third.  His grandfather goes by the middle name, dad goes by the first name, and my husband has a NN.  He has an uncle on his mother's side of the family that is the third line in his family as well and he goes by Trey (as in Tres, the third). The name on that side is John and Trey's son goes by Johnathon.

If the name can be shortened, it makes it a lot easier.  :)

     Just a thought :)

  • My husband is a II. His dad goes by their first name, Jerry. My hubby goes by their initials, J.T. Luckily, my husband doesn't want our child to be a III so I'm relieved I don't have to fight him on that. I really wouldn't want to name our child Jerry. :)

  • My brother is a "Jr." and he is now a 6'2, 27 year old. People still refer to him as Little____ and it doesn't bother him. He also has random nicknames given by different people and is sometimes referred to as Junior, as well.

ETA: I have a few cousins who are also Jr.'s and they still go by Little_____ or a nickname.

  • I think it is too confusing, so I would avoid it.

However my gr uncle is a Jr. He goes exclusively by the non related NN Bud.

  • My FIL, BIL, and nephew all have the same name.

FIL: goes by FN of Parr

BIL: goes by FN & MN of Parr Thomas

Nephew: goes by initials of P.T.

We won't be doing a junior if little one is a boy. Also, my H's name is Paige, so there's that too.

  • My husband has the same first name as his father. FIL goes by Big W____ and DH goes by Little W____. Sometimes DH gets called by his first and middle names.

I think it's a pain in the butt, and it can get confusing when it comes to phone calls, important documents, appointments, etc. I also think it's funny to call them by big and little considering their grown adults and 6 feet tall. I would have preferred for DH to have his own FN and dad's name as the MN.

  • My big brother is the 4th. None of the 4 men have gone by their true first name (Charles) except in super formal settings. I can not remember what my great grandfather went by for sure but my grandfather was Bud, my dad is Buddy, and my big brother is Chase. I know my big brother plans on passing it on also and he will call his son Charlie. My grandmother always says she thought my dad would lose "buddy" as he got older to sound more professional. Nope he is a highly educated dentist named Buddy. haha

My uncle and cousin go by Big ____ and Little_____. My cousin is now 21 and the only people that call him Little____ are family and close friends.

My FIL is Thomas and so is my husband and my FIL goes by Thomas and my husband goes by TJ. To make it crazier my husbands sister married a Thomas and he goes by Tom and his son is Thomas but goes by his middle name.

My husband and his father have different middle names and so does my BIL and nephew.

I like the way my dads family did it better in having nicknames and them all being different. No confusion.

My pet peeve is what my SIL and BIL did. Since the name is not a generation name of passed down fn and mn I think they should have just named my nephew what they call him and used Thomas as a mn.

If we have a son my husband doesn't want to pass on his first name but he does his middle name. Which I'm glad of since Thomas is SO over used through his whole family and I'm not a big fan of my kids having to go by anything but their given name. We already used Tommi for a little girl (though her name was planned before I met my husband) it ended up sounding like she was named after her dad. She even ended up with his initials which is pretty neat too.

    I know a woman who's a II! You're right, though, it's pretty unusual.

This kid may not have a lot of bowel, but he has plenty of guts!
DS born at 34 weeks with (surprise!) gastroschisis turned short bowel syndrome.
131 days in the NICU, 7 trips to the OR, G-button, daily TPN....
We are impatiently awaiting the day we can say goodbye to his girlfriend Ivy for good.
  • My dad is Clyde Leroy III (he claims this tradition would not have continued past his generation, but I'm glad I'm a girl).  He has gone by Larry among family and in situations where he might be confused with my grandfather.

My cousin's son is named Joseph after his father and as a young adult still goes by L.J. for Little Joseph.

    DD born 10/10/07 * DS born 11/25/11 * #3 due 3/9/2015
  • My DH is the Richard III. his grandfather went by ***, his dad by Rich and DH by Richie. if we had a DS he said he wouldnt want a RIchard IV but if we did i would have probably called him Ricky. My dad is a Jr with a very unusual first and middle name but a common last name. My grandfather was called by his last name and my dad went by Bud, which is completely unrelated to his name.

  • My husband's father is Riccardo, he is Ricky. Son will probably also be Ricky. If we name him Riccardo John (haven't decided on a middle name yet), maybe RJ? Or, I'll start calling hubby Rick and son Ricky.

  • My brother is a third and there was never a problem because you could tell, using context, who was talking about whom.  However, I used to like to yell their name in the kitchen at Christmas just to hear all three answer.  We are down to one now, so it's easier.
  • My fiance has same first name as his dad (Eugene) so he goes by his middle. We will not be inflicting that name on a child so no problem for us!

My nephew is Albert after his father and grandfather. His grandpa goes by Al, dad goes by Bert, so my nephew is Albie. I also know a James Jr, he's James and his dad is Jim.

  • For our son, we had talked about naming him after my husband. DH is Eric, and we would have called our son EJ (for Eric Junior). We didn't go that way.

DH is James, the 4th in the line maybe?  They are James, Jim, Jimmy and Jamie I think.

His cousin and uncle are both Paul, the 2nd and 3rd in their line.  They went by Big Paul and Little Paul until Little Paul hit like 6'5 and now he's P3.

I hate naming kids after parents.  A lot.  I think DH's family still isn't over the fact that DS isn't James.

Lol... DH's parents wanted us to name our first son Chad Allan B_____  II or Jr... We were not fans, and went a completely different route, as evidenced by my siggy :)

At least they didn't suggest we name our first girl Kristen Michelle B____ II....

Though DH's biological parents have a Michael the I, II, and now III.... so confusing!

  • My dad and brother went by Big _____ and Little _____ still.  It bugs my brother, and wasn't very fun for me when one of my dad's collegues would call and I would have to ask them if they wanted Big _____ or Little _____.  This is why I refused to name DS are DH.

My grandfather goes by his initials RJ and his oldest goes by the MN, so that's not too bad.  On a fun note, my grandmother named her daughter after her, so grandma goes by FN and my aunt goes by MN.  I thought that was kinda cool.
