Hi,
I don't post much on this page but thought it would be the best place to ask an amnio question. The paperwork I have from MFM has one set of instructions for preparing for the exam, not separate instructions for an ultrasound and an amnio. If you had an amnio, did you eat normally leading up to it? Also, did you have to consume the large amount of water that you did prior to an u/s? Thanks.

Re: Prep for Amnio
I had the amnio done 2-3 weeks ago. They told I don't need to do anything for the prep going in to the office, they didn't want me to have a full bladder, either. But they wanted me to be on 24 hour bedrest and take it easy for as far as physical activity for 48 hours. They also wanted me to make sure that I have a ride home and would not be driving myself, but honestly I think those are just being cautious, because I felt fine after the procedure was done. It only takes 10-15 min including the ultrasound before hand, prepping and soaping the area, getting the sample, taping you up, etc. We sat longer in the waiting room! They sent me home with a sheet of what symptoms warrants a call back to the dr's office and it was fever, vaginal fluid leak or any sort of spotting. The procedure is not painful at all, so don't be scared.
ETA: I forgot to answer your question about food, yes I did eat normall, mine was scheduled at 11:00, so I had breakfast and a little snack at 10, I had soup for lunch but because I just wasn't very hungry, but ate a normal dinner.
I just got off the phone and found out I will have one as well. (probably, i'm still scared)
I have not had one but I am supposed to tomorrow morning. They just called and let me know to arrive for 8am. They have given me no instructions on how to prepare but I can come back tomorroe and let you know what they did and what happened. So far I assume I don't have to do anything since I was told nothing.
That was so fast, not much time to think things through but it's done. There was no prep needed. I went in and although they did a couple hours of counselling and talking the actual amnio was quick and felt like a lot of pulling but no pain. I was told to rest for a couple days followed by taking it pretty easy for the next week. I can go on with life but no heavy lifting and that sort of thing.
