Scary moment!

Hi guys haven't posted in awhile due to moving and house remodeling. Hope everyone and their families are doing well! So this am at 4:30 I heard LO crying and tried to get DH to go get him to no avail. So I promptly got up myself to get LO to eat. The bumper in LO bed does not reach all the way around so I had the ends tied together and it tucked down around the mattress. Even with the ends tied they did not meet and made an o shape. When I went in LO room his head was in the o shape and around his neck! Scared me to death thinking of what if I hadn't heard him crying! I took the bumper out last night but put in back this morning by winding it in and out of the bars. Where it didn't meet I put his comforter over the rail and secured it between the mattress on one side and crib rail and wall on the other. Check your lo's crib for hidden dangers!

Re: Scary moment!

  • i'm so glad you caught this in time.

this is why we don't use bumpers.

can i ask why you put them back in?  i just don't really understand what the purpose is.  it seems more of a hazard than a protection to me.

again, really glad this ended okay this time.

  • I'm glad everything was ok! Like hooslisa said though, that's why I don't have crib bumpers!
  • I don't want him getting stuck between the bars. The way I put it in he can't get tangled because it weaves in and out of the bars and is pulled tight. I feel pretty stupid for the way I had it before. It was fine before he moved around but now it was definitely unsafe.

  • In Chicago they have outlawed the sale of crib bumpers. I think there are some other options that replace thw bumper if you are looking to take the bumper out.

  • Yikes. I don't use bumpers for that reason. It's so easy for them to get tangled up in them. I wouldn't have put it back in if I was you...glad you caught it in time!

  • ITA with all the other posters...bumpers are no longer recommended. I would also worry with how you've described it that he could pull the comforter out from between the crib and the wall and get tangled in it or something. I would take the bumpers and comforter out completely. Cribs are now made so that the spacing between the bars is too small to get their head stuck, and anything else that might get stuck (which is really unlikely) is still not as dangerous as the bumpers/comforter in the crib.

  • Have you ever thought about getting a mesh liner?

  • Bumpers are not really a hidden danger. They're a well known danger. I would take them out.
  • I just took it out before his nap. I think I'll just throw it away.

probably for the best as long as you also have an up to date crib.  i'm not sure what the specs are supposed to be, but i am sure you can find it online.

...if you're crafty and they match the room you can probably use the fabric for something.

nice to see you around again.

  • Maybe try the breathable bumpers? I dont use any though
  • O yea I forgot about those. The only reason I worry about I'd because it's an older crib. I have the kit on that makes it safe to use but the bars are farther apart but not so far he could fall out or anything.

  • I know a few mama's that use the bumpers as teething guards when LO starts chewing on the crib.

  • I've always used regular bumpers but for those that are concerned, there are breathable bumpers.
