Naproxen and Oxycodone and breastfeeding

This is what they prescribed for me and they said it was OK with breastfeeding, but baby seems REALLY sleepy. I looked online and many sources say not to take Naproxen. Planning to call but of course now not sure if I should take it tonight. Maybe ask my ob to switch the naproxen to ibuprofen???

Anyone else on these drugs and breastfeeding and what did your doctor say?

Also, for how long did you take the drugs? I've cut way back on the Oxy but still taking a few each day plus the Naproxen.

Re: Naproxen and Oxycodone and breastfeeding

  • I was prescribed Naproxen and Motrin. I also noticed that baby was sleepy after taking the Naproxen. When I spoke with the nurse about it she said that baby would be getting some of it through my breastmilk so I stopped taking the Naproxen but took the Motrin as prescribed (I can't remember how often it was). I was in a bit more pain than I would have been but I just didn't like the idea of baby getting some of those meds even though they are deemed safe.

I took the Naproxin for 3 days pp and then switched to the Motrin and took that for about a week pretty regularly.

  • I had naproxen in the hospital and OTC naproxen at home after and that was fine. Switched to ibuprofen after about a week. I don't know about oxy though.

    ETA: also had tylenol.

  • I had both.  They did make baby sleepy but that's fine since I was trying to recover too and the extra time helped.  I was off meds after the first week.

  • I took the oxy and 600 mg of Advil for about 10 days and then just the Advil for a few days after that.  I thought my baby was super sleepy too but I think newborns are generally sleepy... your recovery is important and I would make sure you are comfortable enough to BF and move around to help you get there faster.  Rest as much as possible
  • I only took Tylenol after my C-section. I made sure to take it every 3 hours, so it never had a chance to wear off. I read extensively about the effects of the painkillers I was prescribed in the hospital and decided that it was not in my little one's best interests to take them.
  • I was told in the hospital that I would not be sent home with pain killers, to only take motrin for the pain due to this.  I ended up having to FF feed anyway, but still only took the pain medication for 3 days in the hospital, my last day there I didn't take anything.
