Breastfeeding and Period

This might be a weird question, but was wondering when it is normal for period to return when breastfeeding. My DD is almost 11 months old, I am still breastfeeding, and still haven't had period.  Wondering if this is normal? I am planning on continuing to breastfeed, but also want to think about trying for another baby. Thanks!

Re: Breastfeeding and Period

  • I got mine at 6 months PP... but I think there is a wide range of normal. Posting this on the BF board might get you some more responses.

  • Ditto to PP's suggestion of the BF board for answers.

DS is almost 14 months old and I haven't had a period yet. Perfectly normal for breastfeeding moms.

If you want to get your period back sooner, increasing the time between night feedings and also increasing LO's solids intake, even while nursing on demand, can help. Slowly and gently, of course.

  • I think it really depends on how often you breastfeed/how long your child goes between feeds day/night.

For me, my child didn't STTN till last weekend.  He breastfed or I pumped every 3 hours during the day and at least once a night.  I started weaning from the pump during the day at work when he hit 12 months and I got my period back on his 13 month birthday.    I have friends with children that slept for long periods at night early on, and their periods returned sooner. Same with friends who used the bottle more than I did.

  • Thanks everyone! My DD dose breastfeed fairly often during day and at least 2 times a night, so that probably has something to do with it. I was planning on continuing to BF after her first birthday, but also cut back some, so maybe that will help!

  • My LO feeds pretty constantly, including 2-3 times at night still, and evil aunt flow came back at 5 months pp. Sucks. I wish I was lucky enough to not have to deal with it until I was ready for LO #2. Breastfeeding less might help I'm pretty sure it's just luck of the draw.
  • I also got mine back when my babies slept for about 6 hours at a stretch at night.  Earlier for DC#1, around 4 months.  Later for DC#2, around 6 months.

I've had friends who were still period-free at close to a year, but their babies were still nursing every 2 to 3 hours a night at that age.

  • DD will be one on Sunday and I still haven't got mine back. We have cut back to nursing about three times daily including one night feed. I think everyone is different so it's hard to say when Aunt Flo will return.

  • I got my period at 10 weeks pp. I think it's just all over the place, there's no real way to know when to expect it.

  • After DD1, I never got a period. I got pregnant with DD2 14 months PP, no period, (and on BCP...). I got my period PP with #2 about a month after I stopped BFing (around 13 months).
"Hello, babies. Welcome to Earth. It's hot in the summer and cold in the winter. It's round and wet and crowded. At the outside, babies, you've got about a hundred years here. There's only one rule that I know of, babies. God damn it, you've got to be kind." - Kurt Vonnegut

This was me with DS1 - I had just night weaned him and was waiting to get my period back when he was about 22 months, and got pg instead. I went 22 months without a period with my second son, also (it came back when I night weaned him). Best side effect of night nursing ever!

    DS1 - Feb 2008

    DS2 - Oct 2010 (my VBAC baby!)

  • With DD1 I got my period back at 7mths.

With DD2, I still don't have my period either. Like you I'm starting to think about TTC.

It really does vary from person to person.

  • DS is 16 months and I still don't have AF (yea!). He nurses a lot at night still, but has cut back during the day.

I read somewhere (I think Kelly Mom?) that the average time for AF to return for BF moms is 14 months PP.

All of this for me, too. This kid eats so often that I thought I would be good for a while! Not so much.
