Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Favors one breast

My LO is 11 weeks and favors my right breast more than the left when feeding. He latches on better and is more content. Both nipples are the same not inverted or anything else going on. I've pumped and manually extracted milk so I know it's coming out of the left one. When he's on that one he squirms and keeps spitting it out. Anyone else go through this??? Not sure what else I can do other than continuously latching him back on when he lets it go

  • My LC said its very common for babies to prefer a side. She said its often chosen based on how they lay in utero. Just keep relatching. It only took a few weeks for dd to get over her preference.

This.  My DS also preferred the right side.  It actually took me 12 hours in the hospital to get him to nurse from my left breast at all.

Just keep forcing him to relatch and he'll get used to it with time.  Also, if he's getting bottles (at daycare, etc), ask them to hold him as if he was nursing from the left side while he takes a bottle.  That should help too.

  • Going to sound crazy but try taking him to a chiropractor that adjusts babies.  It is common for them to get "kinks" in their neck from the birth/pregnancy.  I had dd adjusted w/in her first week of life as she was only favoring one side.  After the adjustment she nursed off of both much better.

  • Maybe you have a different letdown strength in one. It's pretty common to have a "power boob" and maybe your LO just prefers the flow in one. If he squirms and spits it out and pulls away, it might be too fast for him.

I agree with the chiropractor suggestion! They don't adjust babies like they do adults. My MIL (who had a son that needed to be adjusted) told me they take the baby's head and pull it and then turn it to both sides very gently. A chiropractor knows what they're doing though, so don't try it at home.
