I am very lucky that Jonny didn't have any ear infections as a baby. But I know unfortunately that many of you have dealt with them for a while...
My mom is watching both boys while I'm at work today and she thinks little Benny has an ear infection because he's pulling a bit at his right ear and is generally fussy/not napping well. And both boths have had colds for the past week or so (runny noise, mucosy poops, etc).
I think that if he really had an ear infection that he wouldn't be sleeping so well at night. Even with being sick he's been sleeping 6pm - 4 or 5am. I go in and do a diaper change (poop), small bottle and sometimes he goes back to sleep until 6am, sometimes he doesn't.
Did any of your kiddos have ear infections but still sleep flat on their backs so well at night?
Just curious.
I think she's being a little paranoid since I was one of those kids who go chronic ear infections as a baby.
I can't take any time of work this week. But I made an appt for him tomorrow afternoon and my mom is going to take him to the pedi's for me just to check anyway. They said I just needed to write/sign a note saying she's his grandma and can take him to the appt, etc.
Re: Ear Infection Question
Sorry to hear Benny isn't feeling well. But oh yes, during C's ear infection streak (tubes now for almost a year), he was a great sleeper. His signs of an infection would be more daytime fussiness than usual and sometimes a high fever. Once we got past the first couple, I realized the road we were headed down and would take him as soon as I saw the signs of extreme fussiness so we didn't even make it to the fever stage.
I think it's a good idea your mom is taking him in. Some infections do resolve on their own, but it doesn't hurt to get it checked out. If it's bothering him, you can always do some Tylenol.
It's good your mom can take him in for a check. With the holidays coming up you don't want to end up needing to make a sick child visit at the urgent care or ER because the pedi's office is closed on Christmas. I hope he's okay and it's just fussy from the cold (or early teething).
B had a bazillion ear infections and would usually sleep poorly when they happened. We usually wouldn't think to take him in until after he spiked a fever and by then it would be a double ear infection.
BFP #2 5/27/12. EDD 2/1/13. m/c and D&C 6/21/12.
The last two times O has had ear infections I had no idea until we were at the pedi for other reasons. He slept well, ate alright (as good as he had been anyway) and acted fine all the way around. Both times they were really bad and in both ears.
I think it's a good thing that your having him checked out since ear infections can go from mild to bad really fast.
Good to know that there is a wide range of symptoms out there for ear infections.
Since she's willing to take him in for me we'll see what the pedi says tomorrow afternoon. I figure that even if it's just a regular cold and there is nothing we can do about it - at least we'll know and not have to worry about the ear infection thing for a while.
I think it is a good idea to get it checked out.
When O was right around B's age he started pulling on his ears as a sign that he was tired. He still does it to this day, but for the first few weeks, I heard from my mom and MIL that he MUST have an ear infection-turns out he just likes his ears!
Also, it could be the first signs of teething...sometimes mouth pain manifests to the ears and they start tugging there...
Nate has tubes for all the ear infections, but with or without the tubes, we rarely knew when he actually had an infection. A little whiny and feverish was the only clue we ever had. Usually, we wouldn't end up taking him in until he also had pink eye to go with it where it backed up into his eyes. Sigh. My mom said I was the same way - didn't complain much when sick.
It couldn't hurt to get it checked out.
hazel currently has an ear infection that I wouldn't have known about if it weren't for the 2 year check-up she had today. She has given no indication of pain (though she has had a cold). Last year she had a really bad one and showed no sign of pain for that either. She never even cries when she gets shots. Her dr. said she must just have a high pain threshold, maybe that's the case with B too.
we've had a bunch in our house but Jarhead didn't have the signs of pulling at ears and not sleeping well. he did however, get a high fever every time (102+)... i personally think that a mom knows best so i would do what you think but it also doesn't hurt to have it checked. with jarhead's first infection, i brought him in due to a fever, but a friend of 4 told me after that she thought i was overreacting but she too believes that a mom knows their kid best and said it was confirmed when i was right!
hope he feels better tho! ear infections are no fun!
My mom took him in and no ear infection. Although she did say that the Dr. cleaned a bunch of wax buildup out of one of his ears and he wasn't too happy about that whole process...which I can imagine wasn't fun for him.
The Dr. said he's just got a little upper respitatory congestion going on with his cold and to keep an eye out for a fever. Hopefully the poor little guy can kick this cold soon.
They also did a quick weight check and he weighs 17lbs exactly. He'll be 5 months old in 2 days. At his 4 month appt he was 15lbs exactly. 2 pounds in 1 month - wow! Little chunkier!
Glad for no infection! C got the ear wax scraping the last time too and he was P.O!
