Cold Turkey w/bottles

Anyone planning on stopping bottles cold turkey around a year?  Im a little concerned because DS eats 3 meals a day but still has a bunch of bottles. He doesnt seem to get the idea of the sippy cups and ive tried a bunch including the straw.  He only will take a little water w/the cups but no formula. I read somewhere that if you do cold turkey after a day or so they realize the only way they are getting formula is in the cup so they adjust pretty quickly. What do you think?

  • I won't do bottles after a year, except for one at bedtime. I won't give formula in a sippy though, I'll just do WCM.

  • We introduced sippies at around 10 months for DS. We still gave him a bedtime bottle until 14 months, then we went on vacation and didn't bring bottles!

  • I guess it's worth a try if it's only supposed to take a day or so, right? He's not going to dehydrate from one day of limited liquids.

  • My pedi suggested the cold turkey approach at 1 year during our 9 month appointment, she said consistency is key at this age. I am not certain what we are doing at this point. I think I will try cold turkey, and if that does not work after about 2 days, then maybe just keep the night bottle. We will see.

  • I think it depends on the child.  I would hate to use the cold turkey approach with the girls, but I would if we got to about 1.5 years and they were refusing sippy cups.  But we have been using sippy cups for a few months (here and there, not regularly) and when we introduced WCM a week ago we really started pushing them.  Now they drink the full serving from sippy cups when they're with us, but not at daycare or when they're with my ILs for some reason.  Right now they're getting a mix of WCM and formula.  When we started pushing it they would only drink an ounce or two out of the sippy cup and then we would dump the rest into the bottle.  After 4-5 days they were drinking most of it out of the sippy cups so we stopped offering bottles entirely.  One thing I have done is increase the amount of ounces we put in the sippy cup because we use the straw ones and at night when they're sleepy and leaning back against us it's hard to get the last ounce out.

  • We have been giving her a sippy cup since around 6 months, but she's still not good at it. H and I haven't talked about it, but when we cut out bottles we will probably go cold turkey. I think with most things it's easier for babies/toddlers to go cold turkey. I find it confuses them to be able to have things sometimes but not others. They don't know what to expect. Once I am not worried about formula for her nutrition, she eats solids really well, I won't be so worried about how much she takes in a day. If she's thirsty, she'll probably drink.

  • I hadn't given much thought to it. Abby will take a sippy cup just fine now but it took a few tries before she got the hang of it. My MIL frequently gives her formula in it instead of in a bottle during the day. I guess once we switch to WCM, we may transition to only a bottle at bedtime and then slowly phase that into a sippy before phasing it out completely.

  • Haven't been on in FOREVER! Coming out of lurkerdom to ask this bone head question. Why kick bottles at a year? Not arguing, just dont understand. Is there something bad about them developmentally? Or what is it? Also kicking soothers at a year? Is it a tooth thing?
  • I think it's a tooth thing, but I could be wrong. Also it's usually harder to stop things the longer you wait. I'm not super concerned she uses paci to sleep, and I'm in no hurry to stop that. But it just seems like an easy time to stop bottles since we'll be stopping formula.
