Switching from soy formula to milk based at 6 months?

Hi all. My pumpkin has been on Prosobee since about 2 months b/c she seemed to be getting tummy aches from both Gentlease and Gerber Gentle. She wasn't tested for milk intolerance/allergy. She was also put on zantac for possible silent reflux but I think she was just getting tummy aches b/c I stopped giving her zantac after a month on it and she was fine. Since then she's done great on Prosobee and was up to 6 oz feedings during a couple of her bottles. Since introducing solids she's gone to between 4-6 oz feedings which I assume are because she's getting fuller from the solids. We try not to give her too much solids so she'll be hungrier for milk. Lately she's been not wanting her first morning bottle and barely getting to 3 oz with that one. She'll have oatmeal about an hour after and loves it and then her mid morning bottle she'd have 4-5oz. The past week or two I'm struggling to even get her to 4 oz. My mom, who watches her during the day, insists that with the introduction of solids she's developed taste buds and the soy formula must taste bad to her and wants us to try her back on Gentlease to see if it she'll drink more. I'm afraid of going back to the tummy aches and visible unconfortableness but I do want her to drink more since between bottles and mixing cereal with formula she's only getting about 20-22 oz a day and I think she should be getting at least 24oz. Has anyone been on soy formula and switched to milk based with success? Any thoughts/recommendations on getting her to drink more?

  • i could have wrote this post a few weeks ago...This same thing happened to my LO who is on soy formula. i was so frustrated because he stopped taking bottles... i even bought new bottles thinking maybe he didn't like the nipples anymore. my DH wanted to change formula but i just i was too nervous to fool with that...i was given the best advice after being super stressed and it worked.

i was told that maybe he stopped taking formula because he wanted more solids. so i started to give more formula and changed my whole day schedule. and now he eats 24-28 ozs and has even extended his naps!

6:00- i feed him fruit and cereal when he wakes up

    7:40- 4-5ozs

    naps about 2 hrs.

    11:00  fruit and veggie

    11:45 5-6 ozs

    naps about two hours

    3:45 7 ozs

    5:00 fruit and veggie

    7:00 8 ozs

    bed

i read a lot on the bump about giving the bottle before solids... i decided to give it a shot after and he chugs those bottles again. maybe he is thirsty from eating solids? i'm not sure. but this has been our new schedule for three weeks and so far so good.

i was also VERY close to changing formula too!

  • My LO was on Gerber Good Start Soy from 2 weeks til 6 months. He couldnt handle the Gentle formula or Gentlease either. Our Pedi told us not to try the gentle brands and use a regular formula. She gave us a sample of Similac Advance. We started with one bottle a day for 3 days then 2 bottles of it a day until after 2 weeks of weaning he was solely on the Similac. He went from 4-5 oz of soy to 7-8 oz of regular. I  was told he probably felt fuller on the soy thats why he didnt eat as much. (i also feed 2-3x a day of purees) He was so constipated on the soy he had to have a 1/2oz of prune juice mixed with 1/2oz water twice a day in order for him to at least poop daily. Now he goes no problem, no straining 2-3 times daily. He also went from spiiting up alot after every bottle to almost non existant and he was never treated with anything for reflux or spitting up. Im so happy and he seems happy off the soy!
