Hey ladies I hope you don't mind its my first time posting here. About one week ago my endocrinologist drew my routine labs and it was discovered randomly that my liver enzymes (which were previously normal) had tripled in 4 weeks. I have since seen my OB about it who is concerned and running labs to rule out HELLP syndrome. I am not so patiently waiting on those results. Have any of you ladies had any experience with this or anything similar?
TIA!
Re: HELLP Syndrome
I had HELLP in my first pregnancy. It affected my kidneys. It's great your doctor is detecting it through a lab. Mine was very advanced because no one figured it out until I started feeling awful and my kidneys shut down. My OB didn't see me herself- she had a nurse run tests and have me come back later. When she saw me later the next day, she didn't wait for the results because she knew exactly what was happening (i blew up like the pilsbury dough boy). I ended up having my son 1 hour later - she sent me straight to the hospital for a c-section. I was exactly 36 weeks.
I don't want to scare you- HELLP is serious- but once you have the baby, you go back to perfectly fine. My son was born at 36 weeks and didn't even need the NICU unit for his lungs and after a week, I was fine. But mine was pretty advanced. If your doctor is seeing your liver enzymes level increase, my guess is he won't wait weeks. I'd say you're going to have your LO soon - I'd pack a bag sooner rather than later!
Edit- just curious if you are spilling protein or have high BP now? Usually HELLP advances from pre-eclampsia. I never heard of it without those 2 things but I only know from my experience- I'm sure you're in good hands with your doctor who will know a lot more.

Thanks for the info ladies. I really do appreciate it.
My blood pressure has been like a roller coaster the last week......all over the place from the highest it has been during pregnancy all the way to the lowest. My 24 hour urine showed that I spilled an abundance of protein. My liver enzymes are still climbing and my kidney function is starting to show the stress it is taking as well. Because I am not overly symptomatic at this point my OB is going to see me again on Thursday to reevaluate but if anything changes in the meantime I was told to go straight to L & D.
I packed my bag over the weekend when my first set of labs raised concern but I guess I better double check it now because it sounds like my body is done.
Honestly, I am shocked that you weren't already sent to the hospital if you have BP all over the place, you're spilling protein and your liver and kidney functions are being affected. I'm not your doctor and don't know your medical background, but we're not talking about you being 23 weeks. You're over 36 weeks. What are they waiting for? Your body is definitely saying it's done. Please get a second opinion - go to the hospital if necessary.
Again, I don't want you to get scared and make your BP go even higher but I want to make sure you and your baby are ok.
I spent over 24 hours on magnesium sulfate in the recovery room (it makes you loopy and you can't even sit up or get out of bed -it's very strong)- they wouldn't even let me go to a regular room because HELLP was so serious - I was then put in a special area of the maternity ward with a lot of nurses. My OB wasn't on call the night I had my son - she cancelled her plans to deliver my son because she was so worried about the HELLP. She brought in another OB and had the med student leave the room because it was serious. My dad was a doctor and I know that doctors don't do things like that unless it's serious - but I didn't really "get it" until I had my daughter two years later. My roommate in the hospital had HELLP and her husband was a doctor. I saw the concern on his face, I saw the attention she got from the nurses and realized it was not a routine delivery situation. Both of us ended up with healthy babies - so again- don't freak - just please get a 2nd opinion.
Take care of yourself and good luck with your delivery!
