Anyone else have a biter?

I am really having a hard time with this.  My DS is super sweet, but he has been biting at daycare for the last three months.  I love to see him when I pick him up but don't love the bad reports for his providers.  Being 30 weeks pregnant, I literally cried yesterday after getting to my car when they told me he'd had a tough day.  We give time outs and tell him that it hurts people to bite them but I don't know how much an 18 month old understands.  He doesn't have the words yet to convey to others he wants something or he is excited and then bites.  It is really getting hard.  Help!  Advice?  Suggestions?

Re: Anyone else have a biter?

  • Be exceptionally stern. Not yelling, but get on his level, look in his eye, and with an angry face tell him it is never ok to hurt your friends. Our mouths are for food, and toothbrushes. If your friends are doinf x, y, or z, you can say a,b,c whatever is appropriate. But I am not going to let you hurt your friends/mom/dad. Then sit him firmly in time out and "help" him stay there until he is calm. But you must do this immediately at the time of the incident. Unfortunately, they don't have the greatest memories so following up/punishing at home isn't that fabulous right now.

If it is a teething issue, can his DCP offer him a toothbrush to "brush"/chew on for a bit?

  • LO has been known to do this when really mad. We have done what PP said, and try to explain it to her.  I think she kinda gets it because it has gotten better. But it can be hard at times. Especially when my little one acts like we killed her puppy when we discipline her. Those huge tears get me everytime!

Holy moly, does she stick the lip out too? My DS does it and seems to have mastered the single tear and it's seriously the most pitiful face ever. I hate having to be mean, and usually we hug it out. But I think it's karma, for me being a biter.

  • DD has bitten someone twice at daycare and my husband a few times when she gets really mad. I have found it is the most effective to catch her in the act in order for her to understand. Obviously you can't do that at daycare but maybe your DCP can? My friend who is a special Ed preschool teacher said she loves the book "teeth are not for biting" by Elizabeth Verdick.

Im hoping she'll outgrow it sooner than later or we can break her of it. Nothing is more mortifying than hearing your kid bit another kid.

  • Nope.  We have a head butter and a hitter.

  • DD bites occasionally. It doesn't seem to be out of anger, it's always when she's very happy or over-excited. It's a little odd, I suppose. We're not dealing with it very well, we usually scream 'OW' which I know is the exact opposite of what we should be doing probably. Hurts like a b!tch though!
