Hives on LO's ear + low fever?

Yesterday was DS's birthday party at the YMCA. As soon as we got home, he was opening presents and he kept rubbing his ear. I gave him a shower and the ear was less red. Now it's been red off and on, but there appear to be hives on it. He rubs it from time to time too.

In addition, I thought he felt warm today so I checked his temperature and he has a low (99.9) fever. Any thoughts? I'm not sure if I should give the doctor a call tomorrow or if it's nothing to worry about.

Obviously I'll keep an eye on the fever AND the ear, but I don't want to overreact. Thanks :)

  • Personally I wouldn't call the doctor yet. A temperature of 99.9 could be caused by just being slightly overheated (wearing too many clothes, etc.). I'd try a topical antihistamine and keep an eye on it. If the hives don't go away or the fever goes up I'd consider calling the doctor.

  • The temperature was gone by the next morning.  However, he is still itching his ear and it's still red often - plus there are raised areas that are like hives still.  We are going to give it til Thursday (I've been treating it with Campho Phenique (spelling)? but it's not doing much).

  • is the area behind the ear swollen? making the ear stick out?

if you see that, or he seems to lose his sense of balance at all - get to the ER asap

my dd had mastoiditis last year - where the mastoid bone behind her ear got an infection and it's VERY serious and they have to be on iv antibiotics asap to make sure it doesn't spread

it's probably not that - but I just wanted to tell you just in case to keep an eye on the ear

  • We did take him and it ended up being some form of skin dermatitis.  She said she couldn't be sure exactly what it was or how he got it, but that it was a bacterial infection and he needed an antibiotic (cephalexin) and topical neosporin for itching/irritation.  Just a day on that stuff and he seems to be almost better.

    Thanks for the advice!
