Is anyone having a problem with bleeding gums?

Hello! =)

Just a random questions. Every time I brush my teeth (which is twice a day) my gums are bleeding really bad. I also mouth wash after I brush. Now I read somewhere that this is normal during pregnancy? But it's weird, I've never had a problem with my teeth or gums before besides a random cavity here or there. (I've only ever had 2 cavities) And I can tell that my gums are super sensitive. I don't want to get into detail but all around it's gross. Is any one else experiencing this? What should I do to calm it down or stop it?

** On a side note. I'm also taking my regular Prenatal Vitamin, Calcium, and Vitamin C. You'd think that'd help with my gums? Lol

Re: Is anyone having a problem with bleeding gums?

  • I haven't had that issue yet but I went to the dentist for my 6 month cleaning and told her I was pregnant and she told me that I really need to remember to floss and keep good health with my teeth and gums because pregnancy can cause swelling and bleeding in the gum area. Not sure exactly the why behind but she did mention that it tends to happen during pregnancy. Hope this helps! Best of luck to you :)

  • Mine are bleeding occasionally during brushing but all the time during flossing. It doesn't help that I have braces :(

Just keep them nice and clean!

  • I am having the same issue!  My gums are so sensitive, and I am bleeding every morning, not so much at night.  I also find that I am drooling at night, which, gross as it is, is making my mouth very dry and irritated in the mornings.  That may have something to do with it.

  • I did read in one of my books that gum sensitivity is normal.  On a side note. . .Not to give tmi here but I noticed that with the old toothpaste that I was using that my breath was not as "fresh" even after brushing twice in a row.  I had an odd taste in my mouth.  I switched to Tom's cinnamon and it is heaven!
  • I had super sensitive gums when I was pregnant with DD.  It's totally normal.  I switched to Sensodyne.  Make sure you get a cleaning during your pregnancy, things like gingivitis are very common in pregnant women it's important for your dentist to take care of stuff like that.

  • Yes, bleeding gums are normal during pregnancy. Just make sure you are gentle and keep them clean so you don't get an infection or gingivitis. If it gets really bad you can ask your doc and see if they recommend anything.

  • I haven't had bleeding gums, but my gums got really bad when I was pregnant with DD.  My gums receded and I have had a huge battle bringing my dental health back up to speed.  They are finally good, but now I'm afraid they will go back downhill.  I'm very diligent with flossing & brushing properly.  Make sure you use a soft toothbrush and don't press down too hard.

  • I'm a dental hygienist so I see this a lot. It's normal, it's called pregnancy gingivitis. Your hormones cause your gums to react differently to the plaque, causing them to swell or bleed. It should go away after the pregnancy, but until then it's really important to try to control it by flossing and brushing more often and better. Make sure you brush all the way to your gumline, even if the gums bleed. An electric brush like Sonicare does a really great job without you having to worry about brushing to hard or not long enough. Try the mouth rinse Peroxyl, it's basically Hydrogen Peroxide with some mint flavoring, but will help your gums to heal quicker. Hopefully it's not too bad, but gingivitis can put you at risk for preterm labor so try to get it under control before it gets too bad. Good Luck!
