Standing Unassisted and Walking

I see so many babies walking lately and I was wondering if there has been any correlation between standing unassisted and walking.  Skyler has been standing unassisted for about two weeks now, but over the last few days her confidence in it has really improved.

How long did it take your baby to start taking steps once they started unassisted?

Or did they just start doing it all at once?

I really think she will be walking soon because she balances so well, also her buddy at daycare started walking this weekend (she just made one) and I really think Skyler will follow in her footsteps.  But I DON'T want her to take her first steps at daycare, I want to see her do it first!!   I'm on edge because I really want to see her first steps.  I know it's silly and when I see her do it I will be just as excited, but I want to see her first true steps.

Re: Standing Unassisted and Walking

  • It seems like it happened all at once for us. There was maybe a few days between him standing unassisted with confidenance until he would try and take a step or two. Now he pretty much walks where he pleases. I don't count steps anymore.

  • I think it all just came together. He wasn't really standing unassisted until after he was taking steps. Over the last few days, he's gotten a lot more confident, and he can take about 7 or 8 steps. He's also started turning while standing without help and catching his balance so he doesn't fall.

  • Allison has been standing for a while but she has only done 8 steps so far.  However, she cruises all over and loves her walking toys.  I think she has been standing for about 2 weeks on her own now.

She didn't take any steps today, so it may have been a fluke, who knows!  But I will say that no matter where her "first" steps were, the first time I saw it I got tears in my eyes!

  • I'm not sure how long it takes for them to go from standing unassisted to walking, but DD has just started standing up like this, so I'd be interested to see the answers. :)

As for not wanting to miss the first steps, I have friends that asked their daycare providers not to tell them if their LO's started walking while in daycare. I guess their line of thinking is that at least that way the first time their LO's did take their first steps, it was the first time as far as they knew. :)

  • I love my "Ben Log" for questions like this!

    09/07: First time standing unassisted

10/24: Took first few unassisted steps

10/27: Up to 5 steps at a time

11/04: over a dozen steps at a time

Within a couple of weeks, he was walking everywhere

  • Nat started standing unassisted in October and took her first few steps in November. She isn't walking quite yet, but will take a few steps here and there.

  • Julian stood unassisted at eight months to the day, and took his first steps a couple of weeks later. By nine months he was taking several at a time and by nine and a half months more than a dozen. Now he goes from one end of the house to the other and back again, and could literally do this all day!

I really think it's not far off for y'all!
  • Lucas took his first steps a few days after he stood unassisted for the first time. He doesn't stand unassisted or walk unless we stand him up in the middle of the room where he can't grab hold of anything. He still prefers to furniture surf and crawl, but you can see he is starting to trust himself more and more.
  • Thanks for the info ladies.  I will keep my eyes open!
