I like it a lot. In fact, I've done a lot of searching specifically to find names where the nickname could be Kai. For myself, I'd prefer a longer name than Kai, but I think the name Kai does stand up well on it's own better than most short names.
Perhaps these names aren't your style, but these are some names I found when I was looking for longer names that could have Kai as a nickname:
Caius Kynan Caelum (actually pronounced Kai-lum in Latin) Kaiyan (Nigerian and Afghani name)
But if you like Kai, it's a great name on it's own too.
We've known a couple of boys named Kai who have been born in the past few years. It's funny, we heard about one the other night and DH said he didn't like the name, I didn't respond immediately, and he said, "You like it, don't you?" which I don't particularly. I really like the name Malachi, but I'm not sure I even like Kai as a NN for that. I'm not sure why I don't like it. I guess because it sounds incomplete to me, and a little too feminine (God knows much more masculine-sounding names have been given to girls), and I don't generally like K names for boys.
DD born 10/10/07 * DS born 11/25/11 * #3 due 3/9/2015
I like it but would use it as a nn with a longer name. If this LO turns out to be a boy or if we have one more down the road that's a boy we are considering Cailer or Caiser with Cai as the nn.

Thought this would be easier. Yes it is also Hawaiian.
Kai kai as a boy's name also used as girl's name Kai, is pronounced kye. It is of Welsh, Scandinavian and Greek origin, and the meaning of Kai is "keeper of the keys; earth". Variant of Kay. Also possibly South African "beautiful". Kai is also a Hawaiian name meaning "the sea".
Frankie:
I know of 2 boys named Kai never heard it used as a girl's name. I think it might be Hawaiian?
Re: Kai
I prefer it on a boy, it doesn't seem fitting for a boy.

i like it!
i prefer this name for a boy.
My nephew is Kyler, Ky for short. We're Danish, and I think "kai" is a danish name. Kyler might be Dutch though. Or I might be completely wrong.
I know, helpful.
