Central Florida Babies

OB/GYN, Midwife or Birthing Center Rec's near Orlando

I'm hoping someone here can help.. I am a little over 4 weeks pregnant and I have my first appt scheduled for early December (my 8 wk mark).  The issue is that I currently live outside of Boston, MA, but will be re-locating to Orlando shortly before Christmas.  I don't really know anyone in the Orlando area to get recommendations of good places to go.  Does anyone have any recommendations of people/places they've been happy with?  I wanted to go ahead and set up an appointment soon to make sure I can get in early Jan.

This is our first baby, so I'm learning as I go.  Honestly, I'm not sure if I want an OB/GYN or a midwife - I definitely want to research options.  I am leaning more towards a midwife and birthing center, but my husband is hesitant.  He said he's open to tour some birthing centers.  Either way, I want to keep things as natural and drug-free as possible!  Any help would be appreciated.

 Thanks!!

  • I just scrolled further and saw there are a few people asking for recommendations - I've started bookmarking to check things out.  I'm seeing a lot of people mentioning 'Winnie'..I'm assuming this is a local hospital?  Is it one of the best in the area?

     Thanks again!

  • Yep.  Winnie Palmer Hospital for Women and Babies is located in downtown Orlando and is one of the best (if not the best) hospitals in the area.  I don't have any babies yet, but my sister had her babies there and it is really nice.  I think it looks more like a hotel than a hospital, personally. Some of my friends have had their babies there recently and have all said that their experience was great. Below is the link to their website.  Hope this helps and good luck with your move!

  • if you are looking for an OB i would recommend Loch Haven OBGYN.. I suffered a second trimester loss about 10 years ago so I have spent alot of time researching local practices and finally decided on loch haven obgyn. I am 8 1/2 weeks and have had 2 appointments with them already. I am in love. the dedication they have shown already has amazed me. they were very understanding of my loss and have made me feel secure in this pregnancy.. they requested my medical records on the first appointment so they could be completely aware of the sequence of events that caused me to loose my first pregnancy and set me up with a specialist right away. They only deliver at FL Hospital Orlando so if you are set on delivering at Winnie Palmer you would have to find another practice. Below is the website link if you would like more info. Happy pregnancy and keep us updated!

  • Thanks for the help - I will check them out!  I definitely want someone who will take their time with us and not rush the whole process.  My husband and I are going down to FL next month and are planning on checking out the possibilities.  Hopefully, we can have something locked down by Jan - thanks again!

  • I recommend Heart to Heart Birthing Center in Sanford, FL

I had my daughter there in May 2011.  I like this birthing center so much I am willing to drive about 2 hours to birth there.

It is a free standing birthing center.  But it is almost next door to Central Florida Hospital. This might calm your husband's nerves.

  • I delivered ay Winnie Palmer. I was partially disappointed because I felt as a FTM that they didn't explain a lot of things to me that were going on. For instance, after I delivered my LO had a fever and they found meconium so they took him to the nursery right away for antibiotics. Nobody told me where he was going, and they didn't bring him to me for almost 7 hours. Their lactation consultants were of almost no help to me. I'd call someone for help, and sometimes no one would ever come. Instead of them recommending that I pump when I had trouble BFing, they wanted me to formula feed my baby.

The nursery, the doctors, the food, the rooms were all great. Just go in knowing what you want, and make sure to ask lots of questions.

As for midwife vs OB. I wish I went with a OB. There were things my midwife overlooked like headaches, my blood pressure, etc. Eventually I wouldnt even call them with concerns anymore. Plus, I had issues getting notes for work because only one girl in the whole office could write Dr notes.

  • I would recommend Winnie Palmer.  Also, as far as Doctors...Womens Care of Florida is a great group.  They have a downtown location and an east orlando office.  Good Luck!
