Constipation advice

My LO has been having some constipation issues.  It has happened once a week for the past three weeks and I cannot figure out what is causing it.  Today we were shopping and I could tell he was struggling.  WHen he started screaming, I locked us in the family bathroom and just tried to comfort him until he pooped.  After about 15 mins he did his business but he screamed the entire time.  After that he was his regular happy self and then he pooped again later today with no struggle.  Anybody have experience with this and any suggestions to help him.  More fiber or water maybe?  I feel so aweful when he goes through this.

  • Awww poor little guy :( When DD2 has issues, I try to pump her full of fluids and that usually does the trick.

  • We do more pears when one of the twins is a little bound up. There's something about the pears...seems to work well for us

Seriously, once a week for the last three weeks here also. It's getting old. DD gets prunes daily or every other day to help prevent this. She also likes craisins, which have a lot of sugar but work when she refuses her prunes. I try to push liquids but I can't force her to drink. She eats a lot of fruits, which I think helps. Foods to avoid: bananas, bread products, cheese. I actually tried giving her some Fiber One bar the other day when she wouldn't eat her prunes but she didn't like it. Otherwise, I've read online some Karo syrup in water works like a charm. This would obviously be a last resort; no one wants to give their kid straight up corn syrup. But it's no fun to watch her scream and cry trying to poop twenty minutes at a time five times a day... Or I've heard some vaseline on a q-tip...and then watch out.

  • Any fruit that starts with a "p" helps pooping: peaches, pears, prunes, etc. P is for poop! Apple juice also helps Lincoln per his pedi's suggestion.

  • Karo does work like a charm, we used it once at the suggestion of our ped. We mixed it with milk and it worked quickly.
