Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Frantic crying from my twins when bedtime rolls around....

Hi there,

I'm a very rare poster, but I've got a big problem.  My twin boys are 8 months old, and up until now we've been putting them to bed only after they'd fallen asleep in our arms (following a bottle or nursing).  This worked really well, until we realized that sometimes we weren't putting them down for the night until 9:30 or even 10pm -- far too late for a baby to be staying up.  So when we realized that their bedtime needed to be earlier, we started trying to put them down at around 7-7:30.  To ease them into the change, we even began with a later bedtime of 8:30 with the idea that we'd taper off and gradually make their bedtime earlier and earlier.

To make a long story short, we are now about a week into this and they still are crying/sobbing/frantically screaming when we put them down at 7-7:30.  Reason why we're stumped is because the SEEM like they're drowsy when we put them down... like all the books say to do.  They have no problem putting themselves to sleep during daily naptimes, so why are they now terrified of putting themselves to sleep at night? I have to say also that these boys can cry.  Loud. For about an hour straight if we let them (we go in there and pick them up or pat them and kiss them every 20 minutes or so). Help!

  • girl, i hear you.  i have twins too, but they're girl/boy and they used to be this way.  we had to separate them b/c otherwise they'd wake each other up.  anyway, we just let them cry.  like yours they would cry for an hour.  i used to stay in the room while they cried, but i think they sensed me so they kept crying.  i found it was better if i just hung around nearby (like right outside the door).  i don't know if i've helped, but good luck.  i feel your pain.

  • Have you tried putting them down even earlier? We found with both DS and DD that if the crying at bedtime actually meant we were missing their tired cues. For us, by the time we got to eye rubbing and yawning, we were done for. We learned to start the bedtime routine earlier than we thought we should. It never failed -- by the time we were done with a bottle, a book and a song, we saw our first eye rub -- and put the kids straight to bed immediately. For DS, that was 6:30 p.m., for DD that's 6 p.m.
