We do it the weekend after Thanksgiving - we get a real tree, no issues if properly watered. We all decorate it.
I think the santa decorating it might be an older tradition? Also people used to do the entire tree right before Christmas, nothing was up until then and they celebrated the 12 days of Christmas until Epiphany.
Ahhh, that's funny because we actually got the idea from my parents who are "younger" parents, relative to most of the parents of our family and friends. My parents always set up the tree about two weeks ahead of time and strung the lights to "help" Santa, but that was it. When we'd wake up Christmas morning, the entire tree would be decorated, the train and village underneath set up, and all the presents put out and stockings filled - all by Santa. It was SO FUN to wake up and see the transformation on Christmas morning, we're thinking of doing it with our kids

Sounds like you had a lot of fun with it! I couldn't do it that way though, I love having everything up for as long as possible
I decorate it soon after Thanksgiving. We didn't do a tree this year since we're moving, but I might let DS help next year. I'm pretty particular about it, though. I don't even trust Santa to decorate it properly.
I am just now learning of families that decorate the tree on Christmas Eve. This is astonishing to me given the amount of work that goes in to decorating, thinking you'd only get to enjoy the fruits of your labor for a few quick days. I mean, to each her own it just seems like an impossible for task for a mommy!
We do it as a family, although right now, that pretty much means I do it on my own. DH isn't interested in it at all, and the girls aren't much help. I look forward to the day they they can participate more

This is one of the reasons I'm hesitant to continue the tradition, my parents would sometimes be up until 3am playing Santa, and they were hurting on Christmas Day! FWIW, they did usually keep the tree up for a week longer than most people we know, so we could enjoy it all decorated.
Re: Who decorates your tree?
The whole family does. We do our tree right around Thanksgiving.
I have never heard of Santa decorating the tree.
We do it as a family. I asked Santa to do it for me this year but he was like,
// I love you too. //

We decorate as a family the day after Thanksgiving. I have never heard of Santa decorating it Christmas Eve.
And this is the best thing I've see all day!
