Day care transition - WDYT?

Hi ladies, I was wondering what you all thought of this. DS is in a day care center, and we've been really pleased with the care he is getting. The owner called me today and mentioned he might be ready to transition to the next room up. He's 10 months, but he's starting to take steps, and he's a lot bigger than a lot of the other babies in the room (23-24 lbs, probably 30" tall right now). And he's everywhere!

Their transition period is long (2 weeks minimum), and she felt he might do well in the next room with more activity, stimulation, etc.

Does anyone see any reason why it's too soon to move him up? I'm open to the idea, but at the same time, he still seems so little to me, and I'm not ready to think about him growing up!

What say you? Thanks!

  • I understand why you don't want him to go just yet, but honestly, I think it'll be good for him.  He's obviously close to being ready otherwise the daycare people wouldn't have mentioned it (and they see lots of kids everyday, so they probably know what they're talking about). New toys, new friends, and new activities will be good for his development.  And sometimes, kids act out when they get bored, so you don't want to keep him in his current room too long.  Just out of curiosity, will they move him back if it doesn't work according to plan?

  • With a two-week transition, I would definitely say give it a try.

It sounds like they are open to a much longer transition time if necessary, but the minimum is 2 weeks. Since they want to start after the holiday, he'll have three days that week. I figure we'll try it for those days and see how it goes. If he is doing well with it, we'll keep going. If not, I may back it up a bit.

  • Once he transitions to the young toddler area, you will be amazed at how much he learns and begins to develop. You have some very exciting and fun times ahead. There is no reason to hold him back. He will have a blast and will be a lot less bored during the day in his new class. Yay! Young toddlers are the best!

  • My only concern would be naps. . . does your son need 1 or 2 and how many does the "older" room do?  Also, will he need to sleep on a matt or still in a crib.  It really depends on your daycare and you know it best.   I say go for it!
