Prenatals

I am almost out of my prenatals.  I am currently taking a prenatal with DHA.  I'm trying to decide if I buy another bottle of 150 or if I buy a smaller quantity.  I'm guessing it comes down to which vitamins I should be taking once LO is here and I start breastfeeding.

Any advice?

Thanks!

Re: Prenatals

  • You should keep taking prenatals when breastfeeding. Go ahead a buy another big bottle.

Even if you don't BF, there's nothing wrong with taking prenatal vitamins instead of a regular multivitamin.

  • I agree, buy the big bottle. Some people take prenatals even if they've never been pregnant. My hairdresser told me to continue the same vitamins bc some women lose their hair after birth and it'll help prevent it.

You may want to skip the DHA for this last trimester. I read a midwife's blog where she stated that dilation and effacing is an inflammatory event and That DHA has an anti inflammatory effect. Therefore, it may adversely affect you being able to dilate effectively.

Interesting. I take a separate DHA supplement. I'll probably cut that out in a few weeks.

Interesting... maybe I'll wait to buy them until I talk with my MW next week.

  • I think you should talk to your OB/MW.  Mine told me that DHA is the most important in the third trimester because it aids in brain development and the brain develops in the third tri.  He said not to worry about taking pre-natals during the first trimester because they can cause morning sickness to be worse.  So, I didn't start taking them faithfully until 2nd tri.  I will continue to take them after I give birth because I plan to breast feed.
