Babies: 3 - 6 Months

Swimming lessons?

Reading about swim diapers down below made me wonder about swimming lessons. If your LO is swimming...

1. How old is LO? I'm using mobile, can't see sigs
2. When did you start?
3. Are you doing organized lessons or just teaching LO on your own?
4. What kinds of things are you doing in the pool?

We definitely are going to teach my son to swim, but haven't decided how. We have a pool in the backyard and can heat it or the spa to a good temp for the baby. But maybe we'd prefer the structure of actual lessons.

Thanks!

Re: Swimming lessons?

  • We didn't do organized lessons until DS was about 2.5 and even then it was a basic mommy and me type where they focused on being comfortable in the water (i.e blowing bubbles and floating). I think the main idea is to get LO's in the water as soon as you can so that they can become accustomed to it and not afraid. Have you seen the YouTube video where they baby has been taught to flip over in the water and float?

I would be looking into this if we had a pool in the backyard.

  • K is three months and we will start swim lessons at 6 months.  It's a rec class and is basically glorified bath time- just splashing around so she gets comfortable.  She's going with daddy.  I wanted to do a formal class bc she is so into other babies and tends to "behave" better around them!

  • DD will be starting at 6 months as well. Though the tuition is high, I think it will be so much fun and an activity we (or I) will remember forever with her :)

  • I started dd in swim lessons when she was 10 weeks old. She is now 5 months.

I love this bonding time with her and that she is being taught early on to both respect and enjoy the water. I don't care if she ever competes but I want her to feel comfortable in the waterand above all be safe.

I wouldn't teach dd to swim. There is a lot of skill and knowledge that goes in to doing it properly. Even my friend who was a competitive swimmer and instructor takes her girls for lessons. Fortunately lessons are a viable option for us
  • Thanks everyone! I think a swim class would be a lot of fun for us, and it would be good for DS to be around other babies. I do worry that if I tried to teach him myself, that I might do it wrong and make him scared of the water. I really really don't want that, especially since I love the water so much.

  • We have a center near our house that teaches them water safety and swim lessons. The earliest they take kids is 6 months, so thats when LO will go.
