My BFF was over visiting with her DS (14months) on Thursday, and she started complaining of stomach pain. She went home to rest and put her DS down for a nap. I called her later to see how she was feeling and she felt lousy, her DH came home, and she was going to the Drs in the morning. She ended up going to the ER in the middle of the night, and she has gallstones. They did surgery fri, and she came home yesterday morning.
What kind of restrictions (diet and activity) do you think she'd have? I want to help her out, but don't want to bring her food she can't eat, etc. I plan on calling her in a bit to see if I can take DS off her hands to she can rest for a bit. With it being so close to the holidays, I'm also going to offer to wrap gifts or whatever she needs.
Suggestions? TIA
Re: has anyone had gallbladder surgery?
As for helping, offering to wrap gifts and take DS off her hands would be the best help I'd think. If you're out at te store, ask if she needs anything.
Hope she feels better soon!
I know a few people who have dealt with this mess. All of them have trouble with lettuce and popcorn. Maybe it is fiber-y stuff. Honestly, they still eat it...but are usually sorry afterwards. I bet she has to sit and rest a lot to let things heal. Wrapping presents and whatnot might be a big a help as anything.
If it were me post surgery, I would be thankful that someone thought to help me take care of my family. Even if I could not eat whatever was cooked for us, having DH and LO taken care of is relief enough.
I had mine removed in 2001 (day before 9/11) after more than 2 years of on and off suffering. I had a jackass of a doctor who didn't want me to have surgery. Oy. Anyhow, it was the best decision ever. Surgery was a relative piece of cake and I went back to work later that week. Some pain, but not that bad. And I haven't had a problem eating anything, even right after. No dietary restrictions for me.
I didn't have kids then, but I'm sure any kind of offer of help would be appreciated.
I had mine out in 2008-- did her doctors do it laproscopic? (sp?) I had mine out that way and I felt better after about a week, but it was closer to 2 weeks before I felt like myself.
I don't know if I could have picked up a toddler though-- or played on the floor much so your thought to take her child off of her hands is a great one-- you sound like a really thoughtful person.
I was able to eat pretty much anything without getting sick, but she may have different restrictions so I would ask her that personally. I know some people that have their gallbladders out are sensitive to fried or fatty foods afterwards.

I had my gallbladder removed in 2003. I can't remember exactly what they told me at the time, but i ate light, bland foods Nothing heavy and greasy, lots of soup and toast too. I was told not to lift anything heavy for 4 weeks.
To this day, certain foods bother me, like spicy and fried foods. Does anyone find that their 'bathroom habits' have changed (ie more frequent) or that they have gained weight since their gallbladders have been removed?
I had mine out in June this year. It hasn't changed my diet or life at all. Couldn't lift anything over 20lbs for a couple weeks but that was it.
Really just helping with her kid for a few days will be awesome. Soup would be nice too.
I had it a few years ago. Its not too bad, but the first few days after the surgery are really hard because there is a lot of pain and tenderness in your stomach area. I remember it hurt to move, or use the bathroom, because it hurt to use those muscles at all. If they did it laporoscopically, she will probably have similar pain. I think it comes from the tension caused by the gas they use to inflate your stomach cavity.
As far as diet restrictions, she'll be feeling pretty crummy for a few days/weeks. So soups, etc. Having your gallbladder out causes different reactions for each individual, for me, I can no longer eat anything too spicy or greasy without feeling sick. Some others have trouble with nuts. It varies.
