Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

13 month old head banging

my son likes to "rock" or throw himself back in his high chair so that his head hits the back of the seat, also sits on the ground or couch and rocks/ bangs back of head. this occurs several times a day..., is there something wrong or is it just soothing to him?? a little worried, but he's not hurting himself at all

Re: 13 month old head banging

  • One of my girls does this and it makes me so nervous, but our Pedi told us it's ok and that some kids just do it.  My mom told me that I did it all the time and that I would just sit there and bang my head on whatever I could.  I don't know if it's soothing, but there shouldn't be anything wrong.  If it makes you feel better I would ask your Pedi though.

  • My son went from hitting back of head on high chair to hitting the front of his head on tables, floor, chairs, legs, my head, etc, whenever he gets upset.  It is really disturbing but I've been reassured time and again that it's just a phase.  I'm just worried about him giving himself a concussion.

  • Dahlia used to do this quite a bit, but I think it was to only get a reaction from me. Once I stopped reacting like I was scared, she stopped.

Either that or she liked the sound it made.

  • It's a phase.

  • My son does this he has been doing so for 6months now when he is in his crib for bedtime or a nap. As soon as I put him down he gets on all fours and rocks back and forth and bans his head into the side of the crib. Mentioned it to Pedi 6 months ago and again 2 months ago and he didn't seem to be concerned. i read somewhere that it is a soothing mechanism. I also read that if it is done only during sleep, nap, feeding time then its ok. If it is done all day, it may signal Autism..
  • DD was doing it all the time, pedi said not to worry. She has started to do it less now, so I am hoping it was a phase too.
  • I actually read an article somewhere that it's a soothing technique and it kind of gets them 'high' in a way. I have no recollection of where I read that, I found it silly but eased my mind a bit because my LO does it all the time as well.

  • My son does this occasionally, not too hard, I think he is just exploring his world! Does he do it for a long time or only for a like 15 or 30 seconds?

  • My daughter has been doing the same thing. She'll sit up against things and knock her head back to hit it off of it.  I let her do it the first few times thinking she'd get that it hurt.. but she still does it lol.  ( not hard enough to be harmful though)  Both of our parents say it's just a phase though. Hoping they are right, she makes me a nervous wreck sometimes!

  • My daughter does this in the car sometimes.  She thinks it's SOOO funny.  Of course, this could be because I giggled at her and said "bonk bonk!" when she did it once.  Now she can't get enough of our new "game."  I don't notice she does it out of frustration -- though she does do this weird hitting/scratching herself thing on the side of her head with her hand when she's super frustrated.

I think this type of behavior is normal when they don't have many words to express themselves with.  If it gets to the point where he's physically bruising himself then I'd talk to the doctor.
