DD & one year old molars...

I think DD's one year old molars and trying to push through along with 2 other teeth. The two in the front are just about through and her gum is all swollen in the back on the one side so I think the molars are pushing.

She just started to have some softer poops. It's not diarreha, but very soft. And it has some clear mucous in it. She isn't running a fever. No change in what she is eating. She is a bit stuffy but that tends to happen when she is teething. She has been super cranky on and off but the crankiness tends to go away if I give her something for her teeth (tylenol) so I think it is just "I hurt" crankiness. She has also been more gassy than normal even though we haven't changed what she is eating.

We never had poop change like this before but I know weird things can happen with molars. Could the poop changes be from teething or should I be taking her to the doctor? She isn't acting sick, but like I said, we've never had poop like this before.

Re: DD & one year old molars...

  • It sounds like teething poop to me, but I'm wondering about the clear mucous.  It wouldn't hurt to call the nurse hotline at the Pedi office.  Let us know what they say if you do.

  • It certainly could be teething-related.  Just about the only symptom of teething Lily has is more frequent and looser poops.  I've read that it's a result of the extra drool that they're producing and swallowing while teething.

That being said, if it's concerning you, check with the doctor.  It doesn't sound like there's anything to be concerned about, but you know your dd and what's normal for her.

  • Alastair gets slimey poops when teething. Doc said it's from excessive drooling.
If you are worried call the doctor but I would probably just keep an eye on it and assume it is teething if it is not getting worse.

  • E handles teething like a champ. The only indication we ever get is diarrhea and diaper rashes about a week before we see a new tooth poke through. My guess is that the poop problems are related to the teeth. I wouldn't worry about it unless LO seems exceptionally uncomfortable or is in danger of dehydration.

  • Anytime Gator has teeth about to poke through, her poo changes to really soft or slightly runny. But she never has mucous poo.

  • It figures...the moment I get a doctor appointment for DD, her poo goes back to normal...and we have another tooth, so i guess it was from teething!
