Swimming lessons ? XP

If your LO is swimming...

1. How old is LO? I'm using mobile, can't see sigs
2. When did you start?
3. Are you doing organized lessons or just teaching LO on your own?
4. What kinds of things are you doing in the pool?

We definitely are going to teach my son to swim, but haven't decided how. We have a pool in the backyard and can heat it or the spa to a good temp for the baby. But maybe we'd prefer the structure of actual lessons.

Thanks!

Re: Swimming lessons ? XP

  • DD is almost 15 weeks. We started swim at 6 weeks. We go once a week for a half hour to a baby splash class at heated indoor pool. It's a structured lesson, well as structured as you can be with babies under 6 months. We do tummy floats, back floats, tummy time on a giant kick board, and other activities that get her used to the water. She loves it and it tires her out for the next couple days.

  • I used to teach swimming lessons. The only real benefit to structured lessons at this point IMO is to teach the parents the skills needed to hold/teach their child in the water. If you feel you can comfortably teach things like how to do a back float, and if you are 100 percent comfortable in the water yourself, then you probably don't need structured lessons at this point.

ETA a larger pool vs your backyard one would also have access to larger toys like the giant kick mats. And also, should have a trained lifeguard on duty. Neither of those requires structured lessons per se, just going to a public pool.

  • My daughter is 15 weeks tomorrow. We took her into the pool around 11 weeks for the first time and again this past Saturday. We start swimming lessons when she is just over 4 months at the indoor pool in town.

In swim lessons it is a lot of songs and just getting them comfy with the water. We will do dunk dunk goes Kermit the frog. This gets their chins, mouth, nose, eyes and whole head wet.  London bridge where they take two pool noodles and a kid gets stuck in it and has to blow bubbles or front float, back float. They used boats to teach blowing bubbles.

  • I can't wait to enroll in swim lessons, but I have to wait until L is 6 months old. We will be using the heated indoor pool at our local Rec Center.

  • We did lessons for DD1 at 6 months. Then I had two more kids and the next set of lessons will again be for DD1 at 3.5 years old. DS is 2 and DD2 is 4 months and I don't plan on them being in lessons till they can be in the un-parented class. Lessons at 6 months is for fun. Not at all necessary.

  • DD is 14 weeks I think she started swim lessons 2 weeks ago. It's at an aquatic center twice a week for about 20 mins. It's kindof like Gymboree Play and Music class in the water. She LOVES it.

  • Thanks for all the responses! I swam competitively through high school, so I'm definitely comfortable in the water. It sounds like I could teach him myself, but what you're describing sounds like fun and I think DS would benefit from being around other babies.
