Girl Name Question

So me DH and i love the name Miley. BUT we both dont like Miley Cyrus, just the name. When people hear this name will they think we named her after Miley Cyrus? Our other name we like is Mikenna. But i like Miley more. Thoughts? We want to stick to an M name. We are mike and mikaela and want an M baby.

Re: Girl Name Question

  • I sure would think you named her after Miley Cyrus. It wasn't really a name before she was famous [fwiw it's not what her parents named her either]. That said I strongly dislike Mikenna as well. What about Michaela?

Eta: Oh, I didn't see you are Mikaela. There are tons of great M names out there to use without naming your kid after a Disney Channel teen star. Are you open to suggestions?

  • I honestly think Miley is awful. And that isn't Miley Cyrus's real name. Her real name is Destiny and the story told by her father is that she was a smiley baby and he baby talked her, "you so smiley, yes you are" then Miley just stuck. So it's not really even a real name, IMO.

There are lots of great M names. I personally like

Mary Kate (a very cute combo with your name)
    Mackenzie
    Madeline
    Maeve
    Megan
    Margaret
    Molly

  • I would definitely associate it with Miley Cyrus. It's actually her nickname.

    From Behind the Name:

In the case of actress and singer Miley Cyrus (1992-), it is a shortened form of the nickname Smiley, given to her by her father because she often smiled. Although it was not at all common before she brought it to public attention, there are some examples of its use before her time, most likely as a diminutive of MILES.

    Mikenna is NMS.

What about Maisey, Madeline (nn Maddy), Molly, or Maya?

    Lilypie - (KNqh)
  • Yes, I would think that you named her after Miley Cyrus.

I don't like Mikenna, but I like Makenna.

  • How about Maelie or Maelle? They are popular French names that have a similar sound to Miley without the Cyrus reference.

Meredith, Maren, Marit, Moira, Mara, Marlow, Maya, Madeline, Megan?

  • It is a cute name, but if I heard a child named that I would probably think her parents were a fan of the singer lol. If you love it go for it though!

    What about Myla?

  • I actually like both Miley and Macy, I think they are cute.  Something to think about too, while the parents will probably know Miley Cyrus your daughters' friends and peers may not and won't think of anything of it.

  • My niece is Makenna so I'm partial.  I don't care for the spelling, though- are you going with that spelling so it's has a similar spelling to you and your DH?

I think you have a lot of great alternatives here, though.

  • I would absolutely assume you named your DD after Miley Cyrus.  I hate the name Miley.  Not crazy about Mikenna either.

  • I actually think it's an adorable sounding name if I could get Miley Cyrus out of my head. >.< It's kind of a GP name for me. But I would think that anyone who named their child it named them after her. But it's up to you.

  • I know a little girl named Miley and initially yes I thought Miley Cyrus bc is never heard of anyone else with that name. But it fits this little girl and I like it. My concern is that I don't think it fits a grown woman well.
  • We want to use an "M" name for a future daughter if we ever have one so I have many on our list. Some have been mentioned already.

    Myla

    Marley

    Maeve

    Meredith

    Maren

    Malin

ETA: And, yes, Miley makes me think of Cyrus. If there wasn't that connection, I would like the name.

  • Alot of the names sound to old lady-ish. Miley is now OUT! I really like the name but i cant stand miley cyrus. Yes we did like the spelling Mikenna cause it matched our names. For now our number one choice is Macy. It might change cause we have plenty of time for baby to come. We have our boy name set for now. The boy name was just so much easier to come up with.

    Thanks for all your opinions.

  • Considering Miley is my daughters name I love it. I have had the Miley Cyrus reference a few times. My brothers call her Miley Cyrus to pick on me sometimes. My daughter is most definitely not named after the singer!

While dating my husband we talked about baby names we liked. He mentioned his great grandfathers name was Miley. I loved it but on a girl! Well then Miley Cyrus came out so I debated it but in the long run I think Miley Cyrus will crash and burn before too long so it will not always have the reference. So we used it for DD2.

    I love it!

  • I truly believe if you name your baby Miley, she will always have to explain to people "yes, like the Disney Channel star". I would not use it. It would be like naming her Madonna or Cher, it will be forever be associated with her.

  • Anytime I hear the name Miley I think of Cyrus.

I like the previous poster suggestion of Myla. It's not super common, not a McK name like McKenna, McKenzie, McKinley, etc. And it sounds similar to Miley but not too close.

  • I like the Macy suggestion!  Miley will always be Miley Cyrus to me
  • Not a fan of Miley and will forever associate with Miley Cyrus. I love McKenna, pretty name!! I also like Madeline, Madison, Macy, Marina.

  • imageJoy2611:

I can't take McKenna (which means "son of Kenneth"), Miley or Macy seriously on an adult.  They're sweet kid names, but I don't think they are adult names.

It might be good to pick a nice full name that comes with more cute nicknames so your daughter has room to grow into it.  Example - Margaret.  You can call her Molly, Meg, Maggie, Greta, etc... and when she's an adult, she has the option of Margaret.

Other M choices: Mary, Maria, Maya, Melody. Melanie, Marigold, Magnolia, Marianne, Margot, Mallory, Marjorie, Mairead

What she said. I'll also throw in Maren.

  • I love Miley...and I say go for it.  It's hard to find a name that isn't associated with SOMETHING...per my DH. Made me feel better. Also...if my instincts are right...Miley Cyrus will be a thing of the past before long. So I really wouldn't worry about it. Do it!

  • My first thought was Miley Cyrus but she's bound to fall out of popularity sooner or later and then maybe people won't associate the name with her anymore.

I disagree strongly. Madonna and Cher are legends. Miley Cyrus not so much! Not everyone even knows who she is. My MIL only knew her b/c she sang the song Climb and she thought she was just a one hit wonder.
