Babies: 6 - 9 Months

do you call the dr over this?

DS has had a cold and cough since October.  I called the dr and we've been in for his 6 month visit and they say you just have to wait to it out.  DS was so cranky today.  He's not grabbing at his ear so I assume it's not an ear infection and he doesn't feel warm.  He goes to the dr Thursday for some shots.  If he's so cranky again tomorrow do you think I should call?

  • Actually baby's behavior is more important than whether or not he's pulling at his ear (which some babies don't do when they have an ear infection). If he's going in for shots, you might want to get him in to the doc now so they can get him on some meds because he shouldn't get any vax if he's sick. Both of my kids are in daycare, so we have had non-stop colds since Sept. I usually just let it run it's course until my kids start getting cranky or having trouble sleeping through the night. Then I take them in to the pedi.

  • Take baby in. My son never touched his ear, just appeared to have a cold, and had an ear infection.

  • I would take him in. That's a LONG time. I took DD in after 2 weeks of crankiness and cold symptoms. Pedi said she had a sinus infection and put her on antibiotics. Things cleared up the next day and she's back to her old self.

  • Take him in.  My DS had a cold forever. At his 6 month appt, no ear infection and said to monitor fever.  If he got a fever, bring him in.  He never got one.  Over the next 3 weeks he was teething so I just thought his eating less was from the teething.  Last week, he had his flu booster and I asked the dr to check him over since he still had a cough and poor guy had a double ear infection.  I wish I would have brought him in earlier and listed to my mommy gut.

  • I always take my kids in if their symptoms have not improved after a week to week and a half.
  • DD has been congested since November too. No breaks from this cold. She was super cranky yesterday but slept ok last night. I took her to daycare this morning. I will call her pedi tomorrow to see if she can be seen just in case. You are scaring me with all this ear infection talk!

  • Mine temped at 101 (and generally in the 100.5 range) and it came and went.  When we went to the pedi they said he didn't have a fever at all and yet he had a double ear infection.  Never pulled at his ears.  Our pedi says behavior and lack of eating is always a reason to come in.

I would say you've been at that a long time and I would definitely have him checked out.  Even if no ear infection it could be sinus or allergy and might need treating.

My little one has had a runny nose off and on for a couple weeks.  We see the pedi for his 9 month check next week.  I'll just delay vax a week or two if he needs antibiotics, but I'm definitely having him checked.
