Babies: 6 - 9 Months

Convertible car seat

Hello! We are looking to transition my son into a convertible car seat within the coming month. He is currently in a Graco Snug Ride which I have loved but he recently hates being put into it. I think that it's beginning to get too small for him (even though it says it goes up to 30 pounds and he's only 20.) He's a pretty big boy - 20 pounds and 28 inches so I want to make sure that I'm getting a car seat that is safe, comfortable, and will also accomodate his size.

I was thinking about the Britax Marathon because it seems to be pretty highly rated but I just read a review where someone said that their 30 inch child didn't have much room to move her legs in it and this concerned me.

Which convertible car seat did you buy and what are your thoughts about it?

Thank you in advance :)

Re: Convertible car seat

  • I have only heard great things about britax carseats so i wouldn't let one review sway you! we have the graco size4me and we really like it. i would suggest making sure its a good fit in your car that is important for safety.

  • We have Britax in our cars (Roundabout and Marathon) and we love them.  I don't know for sure but my guess would be that most if not all convertible seats will leave very little leg room for kids while they are rear facing.  Try them out in your car before you buy because many seats will not fit correctly behind the passenger seat without the passenger seat being moved all the way forward (making it impossible for you have someone in the front seat).

  • My son is 9 months old and nearly 33 inches tall. I have a Britax Marathon and a Britax Roundabout, both rear facing. I hate the Marathon. The straps are awkward and annoying and my son just doesn't fit in it right. He hates it to the point where I just decided to sell it and got a Clek Foonf instead. The Roundabout, for some reason, is a little better. I think he sits back a bit deeper and that helps a bit. However, I can see him getting to the top of the shell very quickly.

I agree that the seat itself is a nice seat but if you have a taller kid, I'd definitely give it a test run first. I got mine for my shower before I had any idea how big my baby would be and if I was doing it over again, I'd do test installations of several seats with the baby in it to see how it worked in the car I was putting it in.

  • We have the Britax Advocate g3-70 and so far they love them.  Like pp said, it's important that they fit in your car.  With the new recommendations being that they stay rear facing until at least 2 years, they are just going to be more crunched in there.  I personally don't think there is much you can do about it, until they work on the design of the seats for them to be rear facing and fit taller kids, it's just how it's going to be.  I have used a lot of different car seats while being a nanny and hands down, the easiest to use have been Britax.

This exactly. Car seats are not one size fits all. It depends on your child, and your vehicle.

The best seat is the one that fits your child, your vehicle, and your budget. Also, one that you can easy install correctly 100% of the time.

I have 5 Britax seats, and while I love them, I 3 of them for my daughter. She is a small kid, so no worries there. She can still fit in them rear-facing at almost 5 years old. She is just about to the 35lb weight limit though (for the Classic seats). I won 2 of the BLVD 70s, and my 2 year old has nearly outgrown them rear-facing. He is A LOT bigger than his sister. I own a True Fit and a My Size 70 for him.

I will say that I am on my 4th My Size seat due to harness issues. So, make sure you keep your receipt for sure. However, there are a lot of people that haven't had issues, and it really is a great seat. Super easy to install, and the tallest rear-facing seat on the market. It is 4" taller rear-facing than the Diono Radian seat.

This site is a good reference for seats, and information regarding rear-facing, etc.  https://carseatblog.com/

There is also a fb page called Car Seats for the Littles that is an awesome resource as well.

Thanks for the help, everyone. I will check out these links at work tomorrow hehe. Which brand makes the My Size that you said accommodated your son being tall? I do want to rear face him until age 2.

Also, very good advice to try them in my car. I will do that before making any purchases.

  • I haven't actually received my Clek Foonf yet but one of the things that interested me most is that you can rear face to 43 inches and 50 pounds. I didn't follow my own advice on this seat so I'm hoping it fits my son and the car well otherwise it's going back immediately!

Its new from Graco. The My Size 70 (available at BRU) and the Size 4 Me 70 are the exact same seat. The My Size is just exclusive to BRU, and Graco likes to confuse people. :)

Now that I have a seat that doesn't have harness issues, I love it. It is SO easy to install. I plan to keep my DS rear-facing until at least 3, and this will easily get him there. In fact, my DD could still rear-face in it, if I wanted her too. Its a great seat... if you have a working one. lol
