Probably your billionth K'tan question

Hi Ladies!  I have been wearing DS in a Moby and we both loved it.  However, all the fabric is inconvenient and kinda unsanitary when in public.   I ordered a k'tan and received it tonight.  I ordered the XS because I was in between sizes and went down per the suggestion on their website.   It is very VERY snug.  LO is 3 months and weighs about 15ish pounds and it's a very tight fit to get him in.    When the loop in the back is up by my neck (before I put him in it) the front loops fall across my chest and the x in the front is just at my breast bone above my cleavage.   To "tighten" it would pull the x up to my throat.   Will it really stretch enough to ever be comfortable for us, or should I try to return for the small?    Thanks a bunch!

Re: Probably your billionth K'tan question

  • Can you post a picture with him in it?  It does stretch quite a bit, particularly with a 15 pound baby.  Honestly, I would probably return and get another carrier that will last longer comfort wise since you have the moby and are at 15 pounds - both the moby and k'tan can be used with heavier babies but they aren't as supportive as some other options and not as versatile should you want to do back carries down the road.

Sorry for the dirty mirror...and messy nursery. lol..   I hope this gives you a good enough idea.  If not, I'll have to take another one when I get home.

I like the wraps because I can throw them in the diaper bag.  When he gets bigger and can go onto the hip and back, I'll probably get a ring sling of some sort, but since he's still not quite 100% with head control, I don't want that just yet.

Also, thanks for your input.  I was hoping you'd come in! lol.

  • It's a bit hard to see but it looks ok as it will stretch with wear and you want him high and tight.  How does it feel though?  I can't quite tell but I think you have him legs in?  If so, definitely try legs out as I think you'll find it more comfortable ;)

Ring slings are actually great for any age!  I would not recommend them for back carries except for brief use (and definitely skip the crazy back ring sling carries that are like a ruck tied under the bum - bad idea!).  An upright tummy to tummy in a ring sling (legs out) is fabulous even for a newborn.

  • He is legs out in this picture. lol... I have craptastic lighting in my house.   Thanks for the advice.  I've been reading your website all day. It's a great resource and I've now bookmarked it.

  • (I can't promise that I'll come back to this, because I don't usually frequent this board, I was just looking for K'tan advice myself)

To me (if I'm looking at the picture right), it looks like you have the "extra" sash tied too tight, but the K'tan itself (the fabric near your shoulder) looks like it has room. Maybe it's just the extra sash that you're tying too tight? I will say, more generally, when I first got my k'tan in the mail (when I was pregnant), I tried it on and couldn't fathom even fitting a tiny newborn into it (b/c it seemed so tight). DS is now 12 weeks (and we've been using it daily for at least 8 weeks) and it fits great, it's not too tight. So it does stretch out. I wouldn't want you to jump the gun and return it for a bigger size before seeing if it stretches, but if you keep it too long, you may not be able to return it. Tough call.

On the off chance you're back in this thread again, I did end up swapping it out for a small.   There are some other girls on my home board that are built a lot like me and they all went for the small.  It does feel much better for him.  Still snug.  Thanks for all your advice!  If it does stretch, I'll just sell it and get another xs.
