Trouble TTC

Taking Clomid CD3-7 or CD5-9?

Is there a reason why some doctors will tell you to take it between CD3-7 and then some tell you to take it CD5-9? Are there any benefits to taking it a different set of cycle days? My first cycle on Clomid my RE had me on it CD3-7 and I responded very well...lots of nice and mature follicles. Now that I am seeing an RE here in Japan he has only ever told me to take it CD5-9 which it seems as if I am not responding to it at all, only ever one mature follicle (except last cycle there was a second one but size was....eh, just okay) Any thoughts?

Re: Taking Clomid CD3-7 or CD5-9?

  • Some people say 3-7 is for quantity and 5-9 for quality.  I have done both, as well as 4-8.  I think it is mostly just dr pref.  One mature follicle is actually good on Clomid. You really don't want lots of mature follicles, you might end up with HOM.  My RE doesn't really like over 3, so 1 is just fine.

  • All 5 medicated cycless (Clomid-4, Femara-1) I was instructed to take it on CD5-9. At my last appt, I discussed changing it to CD3-7 since I'm a very slow responder and this would give me an "extra" two days on it.

  • My understanding was the quality vs quantity thing too. CD 3-7, for example, may produce more eggs to be fertilized, and CD5-9 would give you maybe one larger, more mature egg.

I've heard this same thing. My RE said that clomid and letrozole/femara are, for the most part, there for "monofollicular" ovulation- one follicle is a good response, they say. But I I know I was always disappointed in only having one.

    My Wonder Woman!

  • I'm a 4-8 girl.  This is my first cycle with clomid so I don't know how I'll respond yet but on my own without meds I was ovulating between days 16-19.    Good luck!

My CD14 monitoring appt showed 2 follicles.  My doctor said the CD4-8 protocol is following exactly as planned.  He wanted to aim to have me ovulate on Day 16 which it looks like we will, and he wanted more targets for hubby's sperm (I usually ovulated on my own without Clomid so I'm getting 1 extra try this month, so the speak).
