Difference between throwing up and spitting up?

I'm sure this is a stupid question. But for those of you whose LO's have thrown up, has it been a projectile vomit or like they throw up everything they ate? Or is it like they are spitting up? I'm wondering because Jackson hasn't spit up in a long time but yesterday he did twice and I'm trying to figure out if it was spit up or throw up. I watch my twin niece and nephew and they both had a stomach bug a couple days ago and so did my sister. DH was sick at the beginning of the week but never threw up. I took Jackson in yesterday to get his ears checked and he has another ear infection...number 7 now. He had a fever all day and he didn't spit up/throw up till after we got home. Last night and this morning he didn't want to eat except nurse. So I have a feeling he does have an upset tummy. Again, sorry if this is a stupid question!

  • When L has thrown up you could literally see his stomach contract and it was ALOT more than spit up.  He also made a sound like he was throwing up.  When he spits up because of his reflux it just kind of flows out of his mouth without much work.  Throwing up is more noticeable and you can see him strain and his poor little belly contract...its sad.

  • What suitern said. Also, when Asher has thrown up, it is A TON of throw up..like it just keeps coming and coming. And he cries when he throws up. It's the saddest thing. Hope Jackson is feeling better.

  • I was dealing with the same question this morning.  Mikey threw up 3x and it wasn't what I thought it would look like. He threw up right after we fed him his morning bottle, so what came up looked like spit up in color, but there was a lot more of it. It also smelled like puke. Yuck. Then when we gave him water some time after that, he threw it up again and it was the same whitish color.
Good luck, I hope your little guy isn't getting sick!

  • I was just wondering the same thing! Hayley threw up all over our friend and I wasn't sure if she was sick or not. She seems fine - no fever, and it wasn't a LOT, but more than the little spit ups from when she was a wee babe. It was whitish from the BM - but mostly clear so I think it was just spit up. She was playing with a dead leaf that got tracked into the house, so maybe she ate a piece and it was stuck in her throat. (I know - mother of the year right?)
