Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Milk question! Please help!!

My 12 month old was bottle fed expressed milk until 7 months. We supplemented with Similac advance ready to feed. Then she went exclusivly to Similac when my milk dried up at 7 months. I am having yhe hardest time trying to figure out what milk to switch her too. She only has 2 teeth and we have started her on a few more solids but not enough to add a whole lot of calories yet. I want to do what is best for my DD, and i myself drink Almond Milk. I dont know if I wanna do whole milk because of all the issues around dairy these days, but all the alternatives seem like they dont have enough calories/ fat. Please help me! What do you feed hour baby? How much of it and how often? How did you introduce it/ ween baby off formula? If you feed your baby soy or almond, how do you make up the extra calories? Thank you thank you thank you!!!!

  • We switched to whole cow's milk at 12 months.  We offered her about 4-5 cups a day in a sippy cup and she'd get a bottle at night.  We usually offered it with meals.  We added milk to the formula and slowly increased the milk and decreased the formula.

  • My DD has one tooth coming out and has been eating fine for a while. She gets ground beef, chicken,etc...everything in small pieces. We just switched from formula to whole milk cold turkey. She started having loose stools, so we are trying lactaid per doctor recommendation. She eats yogurt, cottage cheese, etc.

  • We introduced whole milk at 12 months. Did about 6 oz for about a week to see how his stomach would handle it and after that it was no more bottle/formula. My pedi said to give them 16-18oz of whole milk a day. Any more could cause anemia bc milk slows or stops the absorbtion of iron. I think if you prefer to give her soy or almond you could make it up in finger foods, yogurts, cheese, etc

I don't know why you are so antidairy.nbsp; I have lots of friends in the dairy industry, and we are big fans of dairy.nbsp; We feed DS WCM and have done so since he was 12 mo.nbsp; He loves it!nbsp; If you are that uncomfortable with real milk, talk to your pedi about alternatives; s/he knows your child's digestive system better than we do.I also agree with PP that you can give lots of foods with only 2 teeth: grains, soft fruits and veggies, and even meat can be gummed.nbsp; I would recommend cheese or yogurt, but you don't seem to like things that come from cows.nbsp; GL!
. I am antidairy because I am lactose intolerant. And when you really study about dairy, it is not meant for people. It is linked to childhood obesity, hormanal issues in young girls etc. But everyone is entilted to their opinion...

Just because you have friends in the
Dairy industry means its good for you and your kids to drink it? Just curious why the problem with me not liking cows milk?

  • At 12 months I started introducing whole milk, so I would mix my BM with it but unfortunately he wasn't able to tolerate it, so I ended using soy milk instead.  Finally in the last month he's been able to tolerate whole milk.  He's always had a good appetite, so I wasn't worry about the extra calories but I always offered him snacks in between meals.
